Untaught dog
« on: March 25, 2012, 09:35:01 PM »
I recently got one of my pups back after a year and a half. It's a very long story but it appears he was kept in a kennel neglected without getting any training.  I have never trained a dog before (just pups) and am not sure what I would be getting into. I kind of feel if he is untrained it should be fairly easy. He loves attention and is the most affectionate Boykin I have ever seen. He is way more willing to please than I ever saw in any dog but I dont want to screw him up by approaching him from the wrong aspect.
Any ideas?
BTW-this was a long time breeder that had him
, so it's not like I didn't research the guy. He actually sold me my first dog years ago.

Perfect time for training age wise IMO.Yeah the dog is behind on basic things that are learned as a pup,but should be able to progress quickly if it's got any gumption between the ears.On the other hand if you got back the idiot that's searching for his village but the village has moved........... you could be in for a rough row to hoe.

Start the same as pups............ get him in a crate and in the house.Get on with the leash and not jerking your arm out of the socket, work on "here" " kennel" and since its a flusher "sit".

Pen
Are you going to keep the young lad or are you looking to rehome him.   I have a client who is looking for a boykin.   Do you know if he's has been around birds and gun fire, if you are going to find a new home for him?

For training a Boyken I'd look into getting a copy of Jim Spencers "HUP".  I used it to train my first AWS and she went on to be a great dog, winning a number of hunting competitions including the Upland Competition at the National Specialty.

My last dog is a GWP and was a totally out of control 3yr old when I rescued him, I thought I had bit off a little more than I could chew.  First we went through a couple of obedience classes, Basic and Beyond Basic.  He is turning into a great hunting dog both upland and waterfowl.  Even with him being a pointer I use "HUP" as my hand book for retrieving and quarterring.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska
