Knight Disc Extreme or Bighorn
« on: March 28, 2012, 09:14:52 PM »
I'm new to muzzleloading and have been looking at the Disc Extreme, I went to look at them in the store and the guy seemed to know a lot about them (but then again I know very little), he was steering me toward the Bighorn saying that it included the parts to work with #11 caps, musket caps and 209 primers for no extra cost and the Extreme was more money plus extra money for the 209 kit.  Later I went back to the store ready to buy the Bighorn, now a different sales guy is telling me that the Bighorn doesn't include the 209 kit and has me more confused than before.  I'm looking for help as to rather or not the Extreme is worth the extra money over the Bighorn and just in case I draw that New Mexico tag I'm curious if either rifle comes ready for both WA legal and 209 capable?  If either or both requires a 209 kit, how expensive is that?  Thanks for any direction/advise you can give, I need it.

my bighorn didn't come with a 209 breech plug.  it came set up with a #11 nipple, with a musket nipple in the parts bag.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

I had the same questions...  I ended up choosing the 50 Cal. Disc Extreme.  I ordered it this past Friday from Knight directly.  When ordering, you can specify if you want the Western Ignition which should come with the #11 nipple.  I hope to receive my rifle sometime this coming week and I will report back to you when it arrives.  When ordering from Knight, you get a rifle case and cleaning kit free of charge.  Shipping was $29.96.  Good luck!!!

Did you get it? How much was it out the door if you don't mind?
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

I got it in the mail 9 days after ordering directly from Knight.  I had to call them as a week went by without any correspondence.   Likely it was just my impatience that got the best of me as I did read it can take up to 10 business days for delivery.  Once I got ahold of someone at Knight, they were able to give me a tracking number and I was able track the UPS truck across the country all the way up here to WA.   The rifle arrived as expected.  It came with a free soft case and a cleaning kit.  Out the door with shipping, it came to just under $560.  I have put almost 30 rounds through it so far and am very happy with my purchase.   It is easy to load other than the #11 cap which requires a capping tool (which is included with the rifle).  The safety mechanisms are nice and easy to use.  I was very impressed with the trigger.  It is very smooth and effortless.  Cleaning was easy once I was able to remove the breech plug which I found to take more effort than I thought it should.

All in all, I am very pleased.  I am now in the process of learning what peep sites to buy to replace the stock fiber-optics.  I think this will be necessary to improve accuracy from 100 yards and beyond.  The current front post pretty much fills up the target picture at 100 yards.

Peep sights... the Williams varieties - I really prefer the FP sight to the WG sight.  The WG is what I call a 'slide and glide' adjustment sight and the FP is more like a scope adjustment - 1/4 min clicks for an 1" @ 100 yards.

There is an issue with the FP... The peep cross-bar can be in the way of lifting the bolt IF the elevation of the sight is adjusted all the way down to zero yards.... Normally this will bever happen but it has been discussed when people are installing the FP for the first time.  Once you raise the bar to the point that the gun is sighted in - then the problem is not longer a problem.  Your current front sight will detirmine the heigth of the lift of the elevation bar.

This is a picture of the FP installed on a MK-85

If you look on the left side of the sight to the elevation graduations - you can see that I have lifted the elevation several marks to sight the rifle in, at this point the bolt, if it had a bolt, would no longer contact the cross-bar.

For the front sight i would suggest that you replace the Knight sight with a Williams ramp, fire sight, and I added the firsight hood to give the sight picture that you see a more scope like view.

This sight can be installed on a Weaver scope base and looks like it might work very well...

I think coyotewallce also has another variety mounted on his might - PM him and get the information from him...

Hope some of this helps...
