Spring Break things to do with the kids
« on: March 29, 2012, 11:25:20 PM »
Spring break is starting tomarrow about noon. For many it presents hardships for the whole family. Some young kids will have to stay home alone because parents have to work. Some get shipped off to the grandparents  where they will all have  fun...or not. Anyway, I thought some of you might have some ideas about how to have fun  with the kids with little or no cost?  The weather might ease up  and there's some lake fishing, and there's horn hunting. How about getting the kids to help clean up the yard and rewords would be a trip to the park? How about a scavenger hunt ?
Anybody have more ideas??

I love this kind of thread!

How about taking the kids out and making some plaster casts of animal tracks?

Have the kids plant seeds in some seed starters for the garden.

Paint the mailbox.

Pick an elder neighbor and help the kids do a good deed for them, help them in their yard, home...

Take the kids to the library and help them get a library card and and a book or two to take home...

Create a paid chore list identifying many different chores with a token cash amount earned. Post it on the refer. Let them choose which chore they want to accomplish...

Pre-easter hair cut.

Get the bicycles cleaned up, aired up, and chains lubed. Sunny weather is coming!

Set up a tent in the living room and let the kids take over the place!

My dad used to take me out in the woods leave me with a pile of sawed up logs, splitting mahl, and say see you in a few hours. Great fun and builds character.

Ha!  I just bought a real fancy schmancy fiberglass handle splitting maul for my son to learn with this school year. If it ain't raining, he is supposed to be out splitting with it.

I switched out all my hand tools from wood to plastic or fiberglass, the boys always found it was easy to break the wood handles, leaving nothing to work with...They moved out soon after that...I wrote letters to all the handle companies thanking them.. :chuckle:

Yea I definately went thru my fair share of handles. Never worked to well trying to pry the wood apart instead of taking another swing. Then having my dad grind the edge of the wedge off so it wouldn't fly off and wack me one. :chuckle:

When I was a kid Dad was still outfitting and spring bear was coming up.  So we spent spring break at the cabin cleaning up, doing improvemnts to the cabin or after winter repairs. Cutting firewood and generally getting ready for the first hunters coming.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
You are never to old to learn something stupid.

Take em to the hills with some hotdogs, marshmellows etc. Teach em how to find tender and build a fire. Try different fire starters. Teach em how to pick a spot and build a shelter.  You can even pretend that you are lost and prepare for spending the night. We did this the other day and even played around with sending smoke signals. It is good fun stuff that might save their life someday.

Many of the lakes on the east side are already open for fishing. Start off by going on a worm hunt.
When my kids were younger we used to camp in the back yard (and in the living room) and they had a blast.

I am going to have my kids (4) crawl into my pack one at a time so I can walk around outside and help me get into better shape for bear season in the Wenaha.... :chuckle:

We are planning a camping trip (overnight), fishing on some stocked lakes, plan our garden in a greenhouse bed so starts will be ready to put in the ground when the weather turns nice, game night, cleaning their rooms thoroughly, as many campfires in the firepit at the house as possible, and just try to enjoy the time with them before they grow up.
