ANd he was planning to do a $1200 build of a super sweet varminter.... But...he wasn't going to have $1200 for a while.... But he could come up with $629 pretty handily....

Would this DPMS that Cabelas has on sale for 629 be a fun gun for a while? Is the action decent? I could always plop a barrel on it someday if it wasn't accurrate???

I'm goin crazy here trying to decide....   I know, I know.... Just do It!

For $1200 you should buy a Rock River, The Varmint A4's are sweet.  I bought one a few months back and I love it, I spent a little more but I put on alot of bells and whistles.  But you can always add extras later.  The best place to buy is in Clackamas Oregon at a store called GUN ZONE, I know that is a ways to drive but the guy has great prices and it is tax free.  1-503-974-9002.  Why a Rock River, because they stand behind thier guns with a lifetime warantee, DPMS only has a 3 year warantee, they DO NOT stand behind thier product.  Plus at the store I told you about you only have to put a couple hundred down that will give you time to come up with the rest.   You will not be disappointed I promise!!!!

An entry level DPMS is not going to satisfy your custom built cravings. You'll just end up needing to sell it before you're able to build your desired rifle. Take that $600 and buy your upper, take your next $600 and buy the rest.

I am most likely going to end up with a Stag... but that is not a guarantee. Its just that my buddy has one and it is a peach... LOVE the thing and its as accurrate as can be!!!

Billings holy cow!!!!  Stag is another good option.  They stand behind thier products as well.  I am sure there is a Rock River dealer near you.  You can go to Rock Rivers website and look at thier dearler locater.  Rock River just came out with thier Fred Eichlar series Coyote Carbines.  The lead time on a Rock River is about 2 months so if you do find a dealer near you more than likely you can put a little down and pay off the rest later.  The Rock River I have is shooting 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards, plus you do not have to break in the barrel's they are already Chryogenically treated.  I would say stay with a Stag or check out the Rock Rivers, both are great companies that stand behind thier products.  But I am partial to the Rock River Arms, I own one and I am really happy with it.

  You could take $600 and actually build a rifle(DPMS parts on a J&G lower reciever) and it will be fun to shoot.  However as soon as I finished my rifle I wanted to build more with more specific setups than just a normal AR.  Even with the $1200 build, I think as soon as its done your going to want another.  ARs are the crack of the gun world.

check out this site.. at least for your upper and lower parts kits.  You can buy a receiver all day long online for less than $100, if you look.

20 inch heavy barrel with 1:9 twist.  just pick up a lower locally and a parts kit and you'll prbably be set for about 600

You meant to say go with a faster twist i.e.: 1-8 will allow the heavier/longer 75 grain bullets.

The slower twist i.e.: the 10 or 12 is better for the lighter/shorter 40 - 50 grain bullets.

A 9 twist will do well with bullet weights up to about 70 grain but will still shoot the 40-50 grain bullets just fine.

Yep! I really like the 1:8 twists on my rifles. I have 1:9's as well but most of my bullets I run are + side of 50 grains.

Not at home, but pretty sure I accidently built mine with the 1:12 twist (like I said I always get twist rates confused).
