Coastal black bear

I just found out I have a chance to go on a hunt in Alaska for Coastal black bear.  Just curious if anyone has ever tasted one? How was it?  Thanks

I smelled the nastiest black bear in my life on AK. We pulled the hide off without gutting it and I put my nose to the backstrap and took a deep breath. MISTAKE! It smelled like the fish it was eating. NASTY! We went 3 for 4 with the rifle guys all getting bears. I took my bow and came home empty handed, but I was not the least bit upset after being around the fisheaters. POW Sept. 2006

Yeah, if they are feeding on tha salmon streams, hey are pretty damn nasty.  Take's damn near a week just to get the smell off of you!  But if you get a fall bear that hasn't hit the streams yet and has been feeding on berries, they are pretty tasty.

Thanks for the input guys.  Sounds like it might be worth donating the meat and just keeping the hide like everyone else will be doing.  We will also be fishing while we are there so at least I will get some meat out of it.

When I got back I loaned my rain gear to my brother during a monsoon on the OP and he about puked.. :yike:
