I found out one thing ...if you up load your pictures to facebook ( if you have one ) it will automatically size your pictures and then you can transfer over to HW ...thats how I do it now

If it's just replies he's having trouble with, tell him to clear out his cache. (look in browser tools) 
Easier still have him download CCleaner and run it (not apple though).

I would recommend saving your original photo and making a copy that you resize. That way you still have your original photo.

When you resize the original, do a "Save As" and then give it a different name. The original will be unchanged. I always give the resized picture the same name with an "r" at the end.
