KUIU Or First Lite
« on: April 06, 2012, 09:40:37 AM »
I am torn on which one to go with wanted to get some input from other people. I am leaning a moretoward the first lite due to KUIU being out of stock all the time.

I am assuming you mean the thermal layers they both sell, Kuiu is great stuff but their Merino is a bit itchy for me, have not tried any of the first light stuff.

I have the Kryptek elephant skin top and bottoms.  Awesome base layer.  They are comfortable against the skin.  Kryptek also has the Marino in mothwing camo if needed.

I have always used smartwool or icebreaker merino before but the Kryptek is just as good If not better.

ALL of the high end merino is nice stuff and very similiar.  Personally, I'd find the best deal and go that route. :twocents:

Minus 33 is a great choice, and equal if not better for some, at half the price.

I bought a KUIU shirt, but if you're looking base layer and don't need camo, take a look at Smartwool and icebreaker...  think they have longer wool fibers... and on a positive note you can wear them when not hunting.

I do like the KUIU camo pattern.
Old enough to know better.
Young enough to go for it.

None of my KUIU merino is camo. :dunno:

You can't go wrong with either company.  Both make great products in my opinion and I have used both.

Just got my first lite base layer.  Suprised the heck out of me.  Softer than cotton, not itchy at all.  Some other "ultra fine" merino has been a bit ithcy.  Not this.  Would probably have gone with Kuiu, but couldn't get it!

I have not seen or touch the Kuiu but comparing the First Lite to Minus 33, I would just go with the Minus 33 to save some $$$.  It's the same stuff.  My skin is sensitive and I can wear Minus33 without any issue.

Does minus 33 support hunting?  That was the kicker for me.

Are you talking about the company?  Not sure.  I just buy the best bang for the bucks.  Here's what their site said:

http://www.minus33.com/ourstory.aspx

"Minus33 was started with the foundation of providing high quality, warm, garments to the active and Outdoor community...."

That is cool.  Yes, I was referring to the company.  FirstLite and Kuiu are both hunting companies.  I have and own some smartwool but I do everything possible to buy from a hunting company when I can rather than one that supports PETA and other antihunting endeavours.

Good thinking dreamingbig.  I really like Minus 33, but will have to check it out before I buy anymore. ;)

I use minus 33 for all of my base layers when in the outdoors whether it be hunting, skiing, snowmobiling, ice-fishing, etc...It is amazingly comfortable and holds up really well.  Ive used and washed some of my things a ton and they still look like new.  Never had a sizing issue, and they never shrank in the drier.  I never checked to see if they supported hunting or not though :dunno:
