First CATFISH of the year!!! Pic added..

Been hitting the river hard over the past fews weeks and finally got into a catfish. The water is still awful cold but the good bite should be on here pretty soon. As for bait, lets just say I use the biggest worm!!!

i was told once they catch them at horseshoe lake in kitsap county but i dont know it for sure. anybody know where to catch em for sure in kitsap or mason county ?

best bait for them in california was always liver after you let it bake in the sun for a day or so.

I don't think it is ever too cold to catch them. We used to catch them ice fising in Missouri.

How do you pre-pair it?  I caught a channel cat last year and fixed it up.  Fried it up and it tasted nasty.  I couldn't finish it and tossed it.  Tasted like mud.

From what I understand of catfish (not much) they only move into the shallows when it warms to spawn and we didn't have a boat Saturday night so that's what I meant by to cold

everyone I have ever known says get the skin off quickly..... there were a number of methods used that I saw at the catfish trip but everyone seemed to get them skinned or skinned fillet and then into the ice.... all the catfish i had was good...even the stuff I took home and cooked myself and I had never cooked catfish in my life....

This may sound downright wierd, but here is how I was raised fixing it by my Dad.
We usually cooked small ones whole, gutted skinned with the tail on. Big ones steaked or fillets
Coat with yellow mustard, roll in flour mix (1/2 white flour, 1/2 yellow cornmeal) Fry in peanut oil.
It doesn't leave a mustard taste, but is very good.

PS  I think river cats taste better than lake cats

I soak mine in milk for about 12 hours, cut into nuggets and deep fry them. There is absolutely no better tasting fish.

bigger catfish tend to taste old...

when I was a kid we used to catch the big cats on Lake Powell and we would gut and skin right after the catch, throw the guts back in make great bait, then soak in buttermilk, then batter and fry.  Never had a bad cat that way, get the blood soaked out asap though.

Are you sure it wasn't a bullhead?  Just curious.

They don't have any channel cats in any lakes in Kitsap or Mason County.  Probably yellow bellies, try Bay Lake at night though, there's some decent sized yellow bellies in there that I've seen people catch.

Nice fish btw person who posted it, I need to get a boat out here in the Tri-Cities and fish for catfish on the Columbia and Lyon's Ferry area.

Now thats a Fatty. Likely a female w/ eggs. We use to eat the row alot too, Fry it up along with the fish. Yummy
