Rifle scope rangefinder ???
«
on:
April 10, 2012, 06:08:15 PM »
What combo of the three would anyone suggest? I will be hunting high season out east and need a good quality setup. Don't want to get up top and have a failure. I would like a rangefinder with in the $400 range and about the same with the rifle I'm not sure what a good 10 x 50 scope goes for or should I get higher? I need help I've rifle hunted before but I have iron sights on my 3030. Would like to carry it but I limit my range so any rifle that puts lead 400 + yards on target is good with me just wondering what caliber is most accurate? Thanks

With the given info constraints...I think the scope is more than adequate for power at 10x50, brand would be more of a concern. I like to start with Leupold. There are plenty of models available. Note that if the tube is 1 inch vs 30 mm, the 50 may be easily substituted with anything 40-44mm.
For rangefinder, maybe a Lieca can be found for the $400 price, bushnells should be. The only complaint I have had with a lieca is the one lens (that receives the laser occasionally fogs), the viewing portion remain clear though.
For rifle, I guess you don't want to have to get closer with the .30-30, but you can extend the range with Leverevolution ammo. For a new rifle, it is hard to beat starting with a 30-06 or 270 or 280 or 7mm mag or 300 win mag.

Do you know what the compact short barrels are ? 300 win short mag?
Are they less accurate or is the battle even shorter? My grandfather has one I should call him. Just thinking I could save weight with a compact. My girlfriend will be elk and deer huting with it as well she's small the 3030 was perfect size for her last year 15 yards head shot lol her first buck. Thanks for the info

5-20 scope is way overkill for shots out to 400 hundred yards. A good 4-12 range scope will be all you need. I would personally recommend a scope with bullet drop compensating dials (like Leupold's CDS). Cabela's has the Leupold vx-3 4.5-14x40 CDS for $589.99 online. I use this scope on my .30-06 and can shoot accurately to 500 yards.
A good pair of 12x50 binos along with a compact hand held rangefinder. You should be able to find great quality in each around $400

Good for anything you would ever want to hunt around here, okay, just about anywhere, has good range and plenty of power, lots of factory bullet choices, and probably as easy to find as .30/06, .270, etc, at places that sell ammo if you don't reload. That can't always be said for the speciality short and ultra mags and calibers.
I have it in a Remington 700 with a Leupold 3x9 and was able to put the entire package together, new in the box for less than $700.00.
Only thing I don't like is the plastic stock, feels too flimsly and cheap. Tried stiffening it up with some fiberglass reinforcement in the forearm area, but didn't help alot. So I found a walnut stock on ebay and am waiting for it to get here to swap them out, then will be good to go.
I would say head down to a well-stocked gun/sporting goods store and put some up to your shoulder and see how they feel. Lots of choices out there. Good luck and looking forward to some pics of your set-up and the results of your hunt!

Nice! Sounds like the WSM is a lot better for hiking and has greater inherent accuracy due to the primer igniting the larger surface area of the powder more consistently. Thanks for the info I'll post pics after I get it set up.

Sweet ! I was just thinking 10 x 50 cause my binocs are 10 x50
but I guess a 4 x 12 is what I need lol. I want drop comp marks does the Nikon offer that in 4x12? And is the 6.5 x 284 the feild of view on the 5x20? What's it mean ? Thanks again I'm gonna have it dialed out to six hundred way before season!

I am thinking that the 6.5x284 he is referring to is the norma long range cartridge. The 5x20 is the variable power for the scope.
The difference in shooting between 400 and 600 yds is big (not just 200 yds
). It really does take either some hidden natural talent or a lot of practice to play out that far not just equipment. I'd look into getting into a LR shooting class or talk to some LR guys. In addition to accurate rangefinging at those distances, you'll also need to be able to measure the angle of your shot, maybe even a hand held wind wizard.
