chewuch late buck hunt

I got drawn for the late buck hunt in the chewuch area and just had a couple of questions. Has anyone hunted this and when is the best time to hunt this area as i have a week off of work. Should i go as soon as it opens or wait till later in the season, any comments would be greatly appreciated.

We have had a cabin in 218 since 68 when I was 5 it's only a 15 day season and there is just 15 tags so I would go the last week more chance for snow to drive them lower and they should still be chasing tail. How many points did you have to draw this tag me and my oldest son have 10 we only put in for this and pearrygin. Where do you plan staying going to camp or ? I just noticed where you live hopefully the pass will still be open that late

Yah i would be curious how many point you had also.  I put in for this tag and Perrygin every year and cant never seem to get drawn.

I picked up a map over in winthrop last year from the forest service that shows where you can snowmobile and it shows all the areas where the deer winter when the snow flies, I figured that if they do not ant you snowmobiling there to disturb the deer then those areas might be a good place to hunt when I draw one of those tags.

I had 5 points this year. very excited and pretty lucky. Thank you for the tips and hope to be posting a pic of a big deer after the hunt.

They let you modern guys hunt winthrop in the late season????? Boy they better be opening up some of those units for permit for us archery guys.That hunt is almost a slam dunk in the general season.I can imigine what its like during the permit season.

The modern late rifle tags have been around for quite a few years and it is not a slam dunk for the rifle guys during the regular season. With the amount of people around during regular season it is definitely not a slam dunk.
Some years you can spend all season over there and not even see a legal buck.

I know a guy who has a cabin on chewach river rd.He has 7-9 guys in his camp every year .Every year they tag out on public forest land..That is a slam dunk in my book.I hunt there for early archery so i know the deer are there.The last 3 years there havnt been as many thou.I am sure they do there usual disapearing act in oct thou.

My friends live on the chewach rd and we only had a bear the first 6 days and then it snowed and we shot 9 the last three days!  Definately weather dependent after the first day or two of shooting the local bucks.  All 9 were dark horn bucks.  Two were 24" and one was 25"!  Lots of forest service and game dept land in the chewuch.  My buddy has cabins for rent just before boulder creek!

Slam dunk?  I don’t think so.

Things have changed in the Methow Valley and not for the better.  Deer will be congregated on unsympathetic privately owned land.  There used to be deer everywhere… now there’s cabins, homes, polar fleece, spandex, lattes, trekking poles, bicycles, hairy armpits, and wholegrain “nuts”.
