Gobbler Electrocuted in Front Yard This AM
« on: April 12, 2012, 09:37:16 AM »
Heading out the door to do some scouting this am and all of a sudden KA-BOOM  huge explosion and all the lights go out. Ran out the door and see the power lines swaying back and forth and another blinding flash and explosion. Down on the lawn lays a turkey and feathers scattered all over. When this gobbler flew out of the roost he got tangled in the wires. Blew a hole in his back and singed most of his feathers. Check out the pic of his legs. Still smell singed feathers outside.  One of his feathers is welded to the transmission line in one of the pics.

What a shame... Beautiful bird.
I am not opposed to golf, for I suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering deer.

Reminds me of a funny story. I was on a hunt with the director of marketing for Federal cartridge in Texas. The guide said you got to see this! The area we were hunting was nothing but bushes around 12 feet tall. And the turkeys roosted close to the ground. Except for a few outgoing ones that thought a nearbye power line would work better. He wanted us to see the 100 or so turkeys all stretched out on the lines like starlings. Well we got to our set up point. He pointed to the direction of the power lines. As the first glow of light came over the hill we could see shadows of at least 100 birds. The wind was blowing close to 50 mph. and the birds were trying to compensate for the swaying of the others next to it. It was pretty cool to say the least. This went on for 20 minutes of so. We were just starting to see the ground. Figuring the birds would soon be flying down. And all of a sudden, "Ka-Boom" one of the birds shorted out. There was a big fire ball. And down came the bird, totally on fire. It hit the ground on fire. 2 seconds later a coyote jumped out from behind the cactus's grabbed the burning turkey and ran across the desert, still on fire. We never laughed so hard in our lives! We ended up quieting down, and the birds eventually hit the ground and we got our tom.
