i put the cart before the horse / 7mm rem mag reloads
«

I am trying to get into reloading (7mm rem mag) and I've bought pretty much everything (I think). but i bought the powder before the bullets. and changed my mind on the original bullets i was planning to buy. so i bought IMR 4831 and hornadt 162 grain sst. and im wondering if i should just work up a load for these bullets with this powder or sell the powder in the classified section and buy something else. im pretty much set on the sst because of the price(but am open to suggestions). but I am not sure about the powder.
I'm shooting a Weatherby Vanguard series 2
i also wouldnt mind if this thread turned into a recipe book of some of your fav loads for the 7mm rem mag.

I would use that powder since you've already got it. It's an ideal powder for the 7 mag. Nothing wrong with your choice of bullets either. Maybe not the best there is for elk, but perfect for deer.

just build a load with what ever you have and if you find something better than take your old bullets and practice your off hand shooting,it doesnt take long to burn through fifty or a hundred bullets once you have em loaded and youl get scary good at shooting off hand..its kinda nice to take a break from shooting groups some times
ive had pretty good luck with 180 bergers + r22,r19, and even r17..bergers might be too long for your rifle tho

Ladder test it, don't look at velocities.....look at accuracy.

Also, maybe you're already doing this but are you full length resizing or just the neck? There was an article in American Hunter a few months back about neck resizing and that's what I'm doing now. Supposedly the cases will last longer too so I'm giving it a try. So far so good. Good luck.

I agree with all the above. Use it up. Build the load up looking at accuracy more than velocity. Have fun with it. Unless you picked up 10lbs it will go quicker than you think. Don't forget to post results and pics as you go.

That should be a good powder for the rifle but all rifles like differnt things
As to the sizing its best to full lenght size belted magnums on standard cases you can neck size but with the belted mag you can run in to problems with just neck sizing

Don't ladder test. Do the round robin thing as long as you can keep everything in order. I just use a bunch of labeled ziploc baggies for this.

I found RL22 to work well. I have ran 4350 and 4831. I get better accuracy with RL22. My latest was 175g Nosler Partitions with 61g of RL 22.

I would try and work with what you got. I shoot a 7mm rem mag and reload 150gr Nosler BT to about 3100fps. I dont have my power in front of me at the moment so I cant tell you off the top of my head what I use but it may take some plating to get it right.
First time out I loaded the 150's 2 different ways, 1 loaded standad the other was a max load. the max load shot flat and accurate so i stuck with that load.

I wouldn't sell the powder because you'll never get what you paid for it. Just load them up and shoot them out. See how it goes, and if your rifle likes the load, there you go.
One thing I will say, my Savage 111 REALLY seemed to like the 140gr Rem. Corelokts that come in the green bag from Cabelas on top of some H1000. I have no idea why, but they shoot really well out to 300m (farthest I've shot them).
My hunting load last year was 150gr Nosler/Winchester CT on 59 gr of Vihtavouri N160 (Used that powder because I had 2 pounds laying around).

IMR 4831 is the powder of choice for the 7mm rem mag.
