coon around oroville?
« on: April 14, 2012, 01:00:24 PM »
i have a 9 week old walker i want to coon hunt with(when he grows up) but i got him two weeks ago and then find out in a few months were are moving to oroville area. my problem is i have spent the time walking river bottoms and creeks around here and have found plenty of coon tracks but the time when trainin will get reall serious and mean anything i will live over there. ive been to oroville many times and hunt deer there every year but have never seen a raccoon and my dad who lived there til he was in his 30s says he doesnt think he has ever seen any exept once in town. i will do my own scouting and everything but i just need a general idea of where to start? what river or lake to go to that might have some. thanks for any help

Im sure there is plenty right around the big lake there, plus just south of there along the Okanogan River

too many people, and the okanogan is a bit rough for dogs - I'd head down towards conconully or take the chesaw road towards bonapart - dog friendly and pretty much all the water is loaded with crayfish

Bonaparte Lake, Beaver Lake, Lost Lake and a few others up there are all on the Okanogan National Forest

Plenty of coons in the area, lived there for 51 years, no one is or was hunting them 'cept me that I know of. Go south of town, on the island behind the Wheyehauser chip plant, you won't have people issues and there is a ton of coon there, just don't shoot them all out and ruin your own sport.... Hunted there for years.... Have fun....
