HR 4089 - Contact your representatives

Exerpt from NWTF -

Contact your Representative to Protect Hunting Rights
The U.S. House of Representatives will be considering HR 4089 this week.  This much needed legislation would help protect the rights of sportsmen and shooting enthusiasts.

HR 4089 would:

Reaffirm that fishing, hunting and shooting are important and traditional activities that should continue on public lands.

Provide a clear legislative basis for protecting sportsmen and wildlife management agencies from anti-hunting and fishing litigation, and administrative gridlock.

Protect the use of traditional ammunition and fishing tackle by giving clear statutory direction to the Environmental Protection Agency regarding their authority under the Toxic Substances Control Act.

Allow the importation of certain legally taken hunting trophies that, through no fault of the sportsmen, have become trapped in red tape.

Please contact your Representative today and urge their support of H.R. 4089.

To locate and contact your representative, visit www.house.gov and enter your ZIP code in the “Find Your Representative” box in the upper right corner.

SCI version:

Support HR 4089 - Take Action Today - Contact your member of Congress

Dear Members of Safari Club International:

H.R. 4089, the Sportsmen Heritage Act of 2012, will be considered on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives this week.  This important bill needs your help to pass the House!

This bill combines four other bills that are vital to hunting and central to SCI’s legislative agenda. The passage of this package would be a shot across the bow to this administration and organizations that are opposed to our outdoor heritage.  Below we have summarized the contents of the package, and as you can see it contains a vast majority of SCI’s 112th Congress legislative priorities.

Organizations like NRA, CSF, NSSF, Boone & Crockett have been fighting for this legislation to reach the House floor. Attached is a letter from the Sportsmen’s organizations who actually support hunting on our public lands.

A number of organizations are opposing H.R. 4089, and the major ones are the Wilderness Society, Defenders of Wildlife, and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).  These groups would rather remove hunting altogether from U.S. public lands.

It is time for YOU to take action by contacting your member of congress. Please use our website at http://www.scifirstforhunters.org/advocacy/contactcongressman or take the time to call their office.

Please use the attached letter and the talking points attached below for any of your conversations.

Now is the time for real action to protect hunting, fishing and recreational shooting for future generations on our public lands. http://www.scifirstforhunters.org/advocacy/contactcongressman.

Sportsmen’s Heritage Act of 2012 (H.R. 4089) The “sportsmen’s package” of bills was introduced by Congressmen Jeff Miller and Mike Ross, co-chairs of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, along with several other Members serving as original co-sponsors.  The package contains four bills:

1.  H.R. 2834:  The “Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage and Opportunities Act” is designed to protect and enhance access and opportunities on Federal lands for hunting, fishing, and recreational shooting.  The bill was reported from Committee November 18, 2011.

2.  H.R. 3440:  The “Recreational Shooting Protection Act” prevents the closure of national monuments managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to recreational shooting.  It will apply retroactively to all BLM monuments.  A hearing was held January 24th in the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands.

3.  H.R. 1558:  The “Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Protection Act” amends the Toxic Substances Control Act to clarify the original intent of Congress to exclude lead ammunition from the provisions of the Act.  The bill amends the Act to exclude lead fishing tackle from EPA jurisdiction.

4.  H.R. 991:  The “Polar Bear Conservation and Fairness Act of 2011” amends the Marine Mammal Protection Act by authorizing the Secretary of the Interior to issue importation permits to hunters for polar bear trophies legally taken in Canada prior to the listing of the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 2008.  The bill  was reported from Committee October 5, 2011.

Email sent. My congresswoman rocks on these issues.

"Dear Congresswoman Beutler,

Please support HR 4089 to reaffirm that fishing, hunting and shooting are important and that these traditional activities should be allowed to continue on public lands.

I request the courtesy of a reply. Thanks so much for supporting the sportsmen and women of Washington State

Here's the link to find your legislators. For this, contact your US Representative under the "congressional" tab.

You can also use the link on my first post (www.house.gov), and all you need is your zip code, plus four digit extension.  If you don't know it, just look at a piece of mail that was sent to you and it should be on there.

Congresswoman Herrera-Beutler polled her republican constituents as to what was most important in the coming election. 40% said government spending and 30% said economic recovery and small business growth. 3% said moral issues.

Let's figure it out, Republicans. Focus on the burgeoning size of government and waste, and the stagnant, regulation-gone-crazy, business-killing economy and government regulations.

I'm just trying to imagine what our Founding Fathers would think about why we would ever be in a position to NEED a law like this in the first place. Sort of puts it in perspective.
