Hunting in the afternoon question
« on: April 16, 2012, 09:17:46 AM »
I usually only hunt the early morning until about 10:00am. I can never locate or hear any birds after that and usually give up. My question is, do you hunt the afternoon too? If so what are some special techniques you use to bring them in?
I'm hunting public land that see's some pressure from other hunters. Just trying to increase my odds of getting one at my fav hunting spot.
Thanks

Birds move all day, they may not be as vocal in the afternoon as they are in the morning. But if you can sit on high travel areas you may get lucky. Also in the mid morning after the hens have split, the toms are still looking for a little loving so dont give up to soon.

Thanks for the advice. We planted a decoy yesterday in a fairly open field and called for about an hour. Nothing.... Moved to another field a little higher up the mountain and still nothing. I know there's birds in the area cause we had 3 toms located the evening before. I started to think that they move pretty far from their roost during the day and that's what i need to do as well.
Also is it a good idea to use hen decoys in the afternoon's? Wondering if that will improve my odds rather then just calling a bunch?

I have harvest birds at all times of the day, and most between 9am and 4pm. As mentioned the hens when bread leave for laying eggs and then sitting on the nests and he's looking for more company when he finds himself alone ... often he flies down, feeds, breeds, and then heads up where he can be seen and heard (except on windy days).  Finding his various strut zones is bigger than finding out where he's roosting since you don't know where he's going to flydown to or how far from your setup.

I have always had the same experience. Lots of action in the morning and lots of hiking to no avail in the afternoon.
