OK, question;
so you boil the BRs twice (or 3 times), add salt and pepper and add canned salmon?  Does the fish mask the bitterness?

I could imagine how a little bitter would be good. Have you ever had Hot sweet and sour soup at an Asian restaurant?  I love that stuff. I bet you could make find some bad ass recipes to have a great complement contrasting flavor.

   I grew up eating it so it doesn't taste bitter to me.  All I know and my kids know is when it's cooking it's good and better get some before it's all gone.

I grew up eating them too.  Bitterroots and foam berries were the only thing I never got used to.  Then again, I haven't really eaten them since I was 19, and I know your tastebuds change as you get older.  Could be I could stand them better now.  I have tried them cooked with salmon, deer meat, brown sugar, berries and several other ways (I don't know how many times they were boiled), but never learned to enjoy them.

it would be interesting to see all the roots & plants utilized by the indians of the north west & the recipies to go along with them. i remember my grand mother & some of the things she made (her & gramps were very into native culture ) but all that knowledge went with them.
maybe some of you could do an informational with pics & recipies ?
if for no other reason than for us lazy servivalists ?

I happen to LOVE the verbal history of tribes and have been sorely disapointed when i tried to get a good book telling the stories of PNW coastal tribes... I have often found small bits and pices of stories cobbled together from several tribes all up and down the coast, but rarely a small geographic area.  I would imagine that many of those kinds of stories died with grandparents as well.

as well as the reason for the totums in the yard, all our boats names ect.. wished all that knowledge was passed.
as far as the plants go gram's most common saying was that will kill ya. gramps would show you what you could eat in the streams. too bad they had to leave before i was able to understand what they were teaching me. what a wealth of knowledge they werent able to pass along.
anyway,all you with that knowledge feel free. some of us are interested.
