Halibut fishing clothes question

so a friend of mine that lives on whidbey is really into salt water fishing and goes halibut fishing out of port angeles every season and has invited me along for a weekend here in a few weeks i believe he goes into the strait

only salt water fishing experience i have is fishing the sound around the mukilteo ferry dock for salmon, flatties and crab

am curious what everyone would recommend for clothing or other nice to have items to take for the weekend, my buddy also said if things are slow around port angeles he may decide to trailer the boat to La Push and head offshore a few miles this will be my first experience doing this kind of thing and am real close to clueless on the topic

Something warm and an actual rain jacket and bibs, versus some Gortex crap...  Your going to get wet more than likely...  Comfortable water proof shoes also, as you will probably get wet...  There is a trend building here, good rain gear is a must!!!

Don't forget Dramamine or something .....upset stomach can ruin fishing trip in no time -sometimes things can get rough out on that side ...

Good advice above but also make sure your dressed for warm weather also, I wear shorts and t-shirt under my warm clothes and bring along a pair of shoes so when it gets hot (and it will) you can shed some layers, (Grunden's) rain gear acts as an excellent wind breaker when fishing the sloppy conditions typically found offshore so be sure you have them and as JKEEN33 points out the fish can make a real mess out of your clothes so its really nice to be able to hose off yourself after dealing with a bleeding, puking, flopping, slippery fishy.

I hooked up a 6gal gas tank to an RV water 12volt pump and filled it with fresh water so I can clean up the mess and rinse the gear pretty quickly !! 


I fish for them out of PA and it's usually pretty slooooooow !!!

sweat pants, t shirt, sweat shirt, rubber boots, all under rain gear, grundens being my prefered brand dont forget the atlas brand rubber gloves and xtra tuff boots

I have spent time guiding for butts in Ak and first off the rubber rain gear is a must! Its alot easier to wash off the blood and slime from the rubbers than it is gore-tex, a good pair of xtra tuffs or mucks and just layer up your clothing like any other time out fishing. I have been known to wear shorts under neath my grundens. It may not be the most comfortable at first but you get used to it! Dress warm and keep a pair of shorts handy so you can loose some layers if need be!

And as Bone and others have said layers for me I start with polypropylene base and then sweats under rubber rain gear with extra tuffs then if it gets hot shed some layers. Best of luck hope you get one. Oh and dramamine non drowsy works great for motion sickness

grundens,top and bottoms,spendy but you will be happy...A light wind breaker over layers is nice if it isnt pissing rain,I never take my bibs and rubber boots off,as said blood bait and fish are so easy to rinse off...I always hve some crackers to chew on lip balm or chapstick is good also

thanks for the help everyone, i doubt i can spring for a set of grundens right now but i got rubber rain gear and a pair of rubber boots so i should be good on that end

hopefully it wont be that slow robo
