Montana Antelope
« on: April 26, 2012, 11:43:54 AM »
Going to apply this year for Antelope in Montana with a few friends, just wondering if anyone out there has any info an some good districts with public land? There is always the option of asking for land owner permission, but if we can get it done on public ground it would make things a lot easier. Any guys ever hunt them over there? any advice at all would be greatly appreciated

Did you go under the Block Management program on the Montana fish wildlife and parks home page there is info there about accessing private property thru that program

Do some research on some units you might want to hunt. MT antelope populations have taken a beating the last couple years.

We have been there the last two years for antelope and we had a great time.  Most of the public land where we were is surrounded by private ground.  There is plenty of block management land to hunt though, and it also doesn't hurt to ask some of the locals if they will let you hunt on non-block management land.  Also, it's been our (limited) experience that when they agree to let you hunt, it doesn't hurt to give them some razor clams, smoked sockeye, halibut, or something else that doesn't grow in Montana.  They seemed to appreciate it almost as much as I appreciated the use of their property.

Like Craig said, do your research, as the past few winters have been brutal on the antelope populations, especially the further East you go.

Yeah, be careful what units you put in for.  The antelope decline seems to have coincided exactly with my decision to start applying for them.  I have tried to draw for 3 years and have gathered nothing but points.   :bash:  I am trying again this year...but they cut tag numbers again this season... :'(
