9mm technology
« on: April 28, 2012, 05:42:49 PM »
Last time I did an ammo test on personal defense carry ammo was about 2001.  It was my trusty 9mm Cor Bon 115gn.  I shot it through 4 layers of denim into milk jugs filled with wet pack newspaper.  I got 14" of penetration and 1/2" expansion but, it was an ugly plug of lead in one jug and the striped free jacket in another with some fragments in a third.

I carried Cor Bon from my first ever gun until today.  Today I bought some Speer Gold Dot 124gn.  Only reason I got those is because I couldn't find the Federal HST 147gn that I want.  I'll have to order those online.  Put the Gold Dot's through the same test and here's what I got:

almost 3/4" of expansion, 16" of penetration, and no separation.  retained weight was 123.8gn.

Doubled the diameter to 18.2562 mm.  No reason for this post other than I was impressed.

Gold dot is about as good as it gets!
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Apparently the HST's are even better from what I'm reading and seeing on Youtube.  I went from a .45 back to a 9mm because my wife indicated that she would want a gun in the house she could handle in an emergency.  Traded my Glock 30 to a guy on here for this Glock 19 (which happened to be the model of my first gun purchase ever back when I was 21).  My wife has said that she wants her own when we get the money.  The reason I tested these was what I was reading, the fact that I hadn't really checked out new ammo since 2001, and when we buy my wife her gun, I was thinking of going back to a .45.  Well, if these perform like this and HST's are even better (over 3/4" expansion and good penetration), I don't see a reason to go back to a .45 for EDC.  I get better control, more rounds, and more practice because of ammo cost with a 9mm over a .45.

I have hunted with and shot a lot of gold dot's. I have always been very happy with them.

Wish I could have found those HST's though.  One day I'll get some and take them head to head.  Until then, I'll have to watch this guy's videos:

I swear I've watched all of this guys video's 10 times.

Here's his 147gn HST test.  He did this before he started with the ballistics gel.  I hope he re-tests them in the gel

I just purchased some 115 gr. JHP Buffalo Bore yesterday. I should try this test. How far are you from the milk jugs?

15ft.  Typical self defense range for the angles of my house.  Shot out of a Glock 19

Set it up just like in the video above for the HST.  Except I put 45 layers of denim taped to the front carton because that's the FBI standard.  TNOutdoors9 does in most of his videos too.  Don't know why he didn't with the HST video.  It's surprising too, how much clothing will screw up a hollowpoint.

Buffalo Bore uses Gold Dot bullets don't they?  I thought they did and just pushed them faster than what Speer does

He tested the Buffalo Bore .45 JHP in this video

feature=share&list=PL47112947DB1DE491

If you do the test I think you're gonna find what I did with the Cor Bons and what I see in his video above.  Buffalo Bore and Cor Bon just push the bullets too fast for them to hold up after impact.  Just my opinion

Thanks for posting that. I had read that before... particularly about the Cor Bons. That being said I have heard a lot of great things about the 115gr Cor Bons too.

The projected energy in the 115 cor bons is nuts for a 9mm.  They push .45 energies.  Problem is, the energy is point of impact energy.  When it hits, it breaks and, as we all know, smaller pieces carry smaller energy so, a lot of that energy is lost when the bullet fragments.  I love their speed and might go back if they change their bullet to better hold up.  Might have to try the DPX all copper bullets they have.

I purchased some 10mm 180gr buffalo bore yesterday too... I am guessing it will probably have the same issues.

Gotta try it and see.  I've never shot it.  I've always wanted some of their 9mm penetrator ammo for bear defense when hunting

Yeah.. we purchased the 10mm for bear defense.  Of course it won't be loaded with the JHP for that duty.  :IBCOOL:  So far I have been very pleased with the gun.
