Split Brass
« on: April 29, 2012, 05:12:28 PM »
I was shooting my Savage 17HMR  today and noticed that about 10 of the 35 rounds I shot today had slit the brass case.  Does anyone know why it would do that ?

I was was shooting 17 gr CCI Hollow points.

Reloads?
Brass used too many times or load was too hot or cleaned with a chemical that weakened the brass. just a few guesses.

I had a 17hmr revolver once and it split the brass once or twice never happened again do not know what caused it.

Not sure how you would reload it?

Just FYI,

CCI, Federal, Winchester, Remington and Hornady all loaded here at CCI in Lewiston, Idaho with a V-max bullet are identical, with the exception of tip color. Manufactured on the same equip, to the same ballistic specs, using the same components other than color of the tip of the bullets. Obviously the shellcase 'head stamp' and packaging would be different on the various products.

I wasnt shooting the red or black tip rounds just the copper hollow points.  They seem to be accurate still they just split the case.

I would email CCI and give them the lot number off the bottom of the box and see if they have any more problems reported or a recall for that lot.

And there not reloads unless the factory got some shell cases back some how.  I just haven't seen this before especially in a small caliber.

Here are picture of a 17HMR blowing up with 17HMR TNT bullets earlier this year.

Email CCI the lot number to be safe.
