First ling of the year... or not....
« on: May 01, 2012, 01:51:58 PM »
Man the wind sucked today!  I also discovered I have few to no places to fish for lings with a cranking west wind and an incoming tide....  So, I decided to take the tide out of the picture, after two hours of not a single bite, and fish a rockpile out in the open.  This way, I ponly had to really deal with the wind, still sucking though, but shifting to the south.  Tried to drift a bunch of times, even going in and out of gear, not so easy to do by myself. No luck.  Broke off a lure and while drifting away from "my" rockpile, I looked at the bottom graph and I'm marking a whole string of rocks.  Finished tying on the lure, dropped down and bang, fish on.  Rockfish.   :(  After a bunch more drifts, I released a bunch of rockfish.  At least they were fish.  Lost two bigger fish, figured they were lings from the different fight.  Finally landed a keeper, an 8 1/2 pound Cabezon.     Still tried for a ling, but a short itme later, another Cabezon, this time 15 1/2 pounds.

So, no lings but two nice Cabs! Here's the bigger one.

Int Expl. is blocking my Browsing for the photo, have to post later.

Not disappearing, can't post to begin with.  When I click on Browse to look for my photo it says Internet Explorer blocked a pop-up from my Computer's name.   :dunno: what's up with that?  I've never had this problem before.   :bash:

Ed, setup an account with Photoshack to host your pictures, it's free and works much better than uploading individual pics to websites.

...and install Firefox or Chrome or something...lol
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Just caught in the same places I was looking for lings.  I've caught them on steep sided rock walls in the past, but these were on an unmarked rockpile in about 70 feet of water.

The big one was spawned out and had parts of at least four crabs in its belly, including a large red rock crab claw.  The smaller one still had eggs.   :'(  A couple of the rockfish I caught today squirted out a few eggs as well.  I don't remember catching the spawning rocks like that before.

Best part, besides the yummy filets, is I have some extra good bait for prawns this weekend.

Nice cabby! I got a few last season that size. They are always a nice surprise when fishing for lings
I prefer them over lings any day.

I'll take cabby fillet's on the dinner table any day over ling.  They are my favorite.  Not to say ling isn't a dang close second.

I've targeted cabbys from the bank. Floating those little crabs you find under rocks just off bottom. Still haven't caught any that way. But I'll keep trying to figure out a productive way to catch them

Last week while shrimping, finally put a keeper ling on the boat, 26 1/2 inch and another cabezon, 7 1/2 pounds.

Today, after dropping my daughter off on Lopez to visit a friend, I got these three fish in less than an hour of fishing.  Lost another nice fish that felt like a cabezon and broke off a big ling or cabezon.  This cab was 14 pounds and the flounder/sole were 16 inches.  These are only the second and third flatfish we have caught out here.  All three fish were caught in pretty much the same spot, a small bump in a big flat....

Try whole squid on a floater rig like that!  Good luck.

They were good, a little bland.  I was worried they'd be wormy or something with all those black spots on their bellies.  Still have to look them up to figure out what kind they are.  Cool thing is, the season is a lot longer for them.

I'll take the Cabezon for eating though, anytime.

I've eaten plenty of those worms.  As long as you don't see them they taste just fine.  Hear they are high in protein too!  I haven't had Cabby since moving from Depoe Bay, OR.  I'm jealous!  Very nice looking fish.

Nice fish, but it would take a ling bigger than those to eat a 17 inch (remeasured it) flounder, I think.

Well, ling season is over here in the sound.  Tried for about 4 hours yesterday.  Lots of rockfish, one little tiny greenling, and a cabezon, 12 pounder, but no ling for the season.   :yike:  Last year we couldn't keep the shortys like 20 to 24 inches off the hooks.  Where they all went, I have no idea.
