permits
« on: May 02, 2012, 08:37:47 AM »
When planning a trip, how do I know if I am going to need a permit before going into an area?  Do you get the permits the same way everytime or are they available through different venues?  I would like to plan some overnight backpacking trips for my 12 year old daughter and myself to new areas, but I am not sure what the rules are.  Thanks.

most of the time if you search the area on the net you can find some kinda of organization that takes care of the place and they should be able to help ya out. or you could tell us were you want to go and maybe be able to tell ya but id try the first

are you talking parking permits like the forest services NW trailpass or DNR permit?

Say like XYZ wilderness area.  I guess I just assumed I would need backcountry permits to backpack and camp in the area for a set time.  I wasn't sure if it was standard for certain types of areas.

Good old permits, heard many of not so good stories about people being escorted out of areas for not paying for permits to access public lands. What areas were you thinking about taking your daughter in? Paying for permits and backpacking into crowded spots, only to find the " medicinal user", and the other local yahoo who forgot that defecating in a designated camp site was "not cool dude" is something to avoid at all cost. Most wilderness areas once you reach a certain point will have a box asking you to register with a simple form to fill out. If your asking about areas such as the Olympics many places require you to register before hiking and charge a fee. Look on the website of the area you are accessing ie national forest, wilderness or national park and they should have the low down on what you need for that area.

No you will just need trail head parking permits if the trail head you are accessing the wilderness requires one other wise just have at it.
