tent conditioner??
« on: May 02, 2012, 12:31:05 PM »
He guys, just getting my gear ready for the first trip of the year, I wanted some feed back on a good water resistant product to use on my bivi tent. My tent is a 4 season Pecke 1, its a bout 12 years old and I love it. Works great with no leaks yet, just wondering about helping it shed the water better,

Thanks guys.

Might be time to reseal the seams. If its nylon i think you can spray it down with silicone water repellant.

If its nylon how about nikwax products made for rejuvinating ski and rain gear.
Look it up.

We have always prepped the tent with a few light coats of silicone tent/boot spray. Hit the tent a few weeks before your trip, let it dry in the yard, hang it in the garage overnight and let it de-stinkify until your trip. Fold it up too soon and quite smelly when you set your tent at camp...

Back in the olden days it was Scotchguard Waterproofing.  Now off the shelves.

A good Seam sealant and NikWax or SnoSeal spray on.   I do multiple coats out in the sun and let it dry all day.

Tarptent recomended a good seamsealer that I have been using, which was GE Silicone II diluted with mineral spirits and applied with a foam brush. Disclaimer, I can not verify all tent fabrics will accept this but I haven't had any issues with any of the nylon type tents I have treated.

My dad uses thompsons on his wall tents.  It works but be prepared for the smell.  It's absolutely terrible even if he lets it air out for 3-4 days or longer.  I think he likes it because it's cheap compared to other products.  Definately something I wouldn't use because of the smell.  Maybe if you're hunting squirels or grouse or mushroom hunting, but big game don't need any more advantage IMO.
