Cow calling kitties
« on: May 03, 2012, 11:46:42 AM »
So a few years back I went in to my treestand to sit on an elk crossing/creek in timber.  Still dark when I got up and began cow calls.  At 9am a large tom got up from his hiding spot in ferns and slough about 40yards from me.  No shot present and he was ignoring me as he left.  The spot he was at was 5ft from the trail i used coming in that morning.  I cant help but wonder when did he show up?  Is it common for cougars to respond to cow calls?

yes, i know of a couple people who have killed cats while calling elk. A guy that works with my father killed one this year in MT with his bow after it put the sneak on him while he was cow calling.

I have always wondered if they are coming in to my calling. the scary part is that they can be 5 feet away from you and you will never know until its too late, or they sneak off and you catch a glimpse of them  :yike:

I've been making cow calls the last few days. Will be using them for cougar and bear calling this year. Getting pumped now that i can call sept 1st. Will be using them with cougar Vocals. Been alot of cougars called in around here during elk archery. Rick

One of the first times I ever used a cow call I called in a big kitty to about 10 yards during early archery! Definetly made me a little shy about using the cow call again.

I shoot most my cats calling deer or elk.... Last year a big tom snuck into 45 yards.... We knew he was there and it took him 35 minutes to clear the tree before Dad and I put the hammer down.....

I was sitting along time but cat came in while still dark.  So 30 minutes maybe.  Another time came in close, I heard em yowl but didnt see em.  I had been there about 1hour.  This area is full of cats also.  Guy living close by claimed he had pics of 7 in front yard and another of one on porch looking thru sliding door. Found fawn with neck broke in creek  still warm and something was in brush moving, vultures were already in trees waiting.  Waited but never showed.  Next morning it was on bank, not much left.  :dunno:
