Interesting...
But I have to say, we are talking about Roosevelt Elk, most of those studies are done on Rocky Mountain...  :dunno:

Thanks Charlie

Sounds like September it is. I'll probably hunt the last seven days of the early season.

The elk will still be in the late run during ML season so If I could hunt private land, I just might choose that with bow. Make sure you are good with your calls though...

But, early season with little pressure on private land could be good also...

Glad I do not have your decision..... NOT!!!!!!

The season over here on the westside is getting pushed back.. i would go muzzloader with a bow because they will be in the rut way more... im doing archery but my dad is doing muzzloader with a bow so i can just call for him and not compete

OK...no pressure... Early season archery starts very early this year. The bulls will not be in the rut but will start looking for cows and may come into calls to check out who you are (probably silently). There will be no screaming bulls looking to challenge or fight, just kind of getting ready for the show in late September.

ML season: Cows that were not bred during their first estrus cycle will again come into a second cycle 20 days or so after their first. This happens during the first couple weeks of October so there will still be Bulls looking for these cows and will be more likely to respond to calls which is your best way to locate them while hunting.

I have a multi season tag this year so if I do not score during early season, I will probably hunt with a bow during ML and see what it is like.

Also u dont know when the bulls will be screaming... little bit of cold weather could flip the switch and start the bulls to start screaming. i Have seen in happen in the bethel unit last year. when my dad got his bull in 2010 in GMU 652 (6x6 bull) they were screaming, but it was in a high concentrated area of elk where there was a lot of competition for cows.

Finally an article that supports both science and experience.  Bottom line is its going to happen in mid september... regardless of moon phase, weather or opinion. Rosies and Rockies alike... Horns harden.....cows are bred......calves are born.

:yeah:
But would you rather show up while the band is playing, or be the one sneaking off with a few cows.. ?  :dunno:
I still say anytime the weather cooperates from August until October, your only excuse for not being able to locate elk, is lack of ....
I can ALWAYS find them, I just cannot always "seal the deaL' because of my own limitations, and reluctance to take anything other than a 100% shot, I just like hunting, killing is a bonus !!
