"Not to sound like a dick, but you burned 10 ten years worth of points toward an area you know nothing about?"

How much in your opinion should you know about the area?  Is there some sort of sliding scale that you live by?  I put in for several states a year for multiple species that I have a very general knowledge of the quality of animals/access/terrain. Then if I'm drawn I do further research.  Been a pretty successful approach for me.  Can't know every road/animal in every unit in every state.

Did I say that you need to know every road or every animal in every state, smartass?  Then asking if there's a sliding scale that I live by?  What a *censored*.  It was a simple question I asked and it wasn't even directed at you.  If you put in for several states a year for multiple species and have a very general knowledge of the quality of animals/access/terrain, then why are you even commenting?  That's kind of where I was going with my question.  Seems like none of these things were researched.

You prefaced your response with "not to sound like a dick" - well you did.

Using terms like smartass and *censored* only further my point.

If he put in for the unit and he had 10 points going into it, one would think that he has some general knowledge of the unit - he's just asking for some help....which others were kind enough to provide.

I put in for outta state units every year without stepping foot in them! I dont live there and have 0 need to be there unless I have a tag! I research units on which ones I wanna apply for IF I draw then I do what I can to learn about area..scout if possible and hunt it. If your drawing good tags it doesnt take a rocket scientist to find game in units. I apply in UT every year and have yet to be in the state.. I know when i draw Ill have a good tag..call Bio and research and Ill have places to start.

Nothing different than what most out of state hunters do when wanting to hunt quality areas unless you have lived or hunted there in the past

Huntnnw hit it right on the head.  I take the exact same approach.  Anyone deserves a little respect when they simply ask for information that others are willing to share.  Its nice to have a little insight when going to a distant land that you have never seen before hoping to shoot a big critter that you have been applying for at least 10 years.
I was contacted last week by a guy that drew an San Juan/Elk Ridge deer tag.  I drew that tag 3 years ago and I am telling him everything I know about the unit so that he might have a great experience like I did.  That is what this forum is all about.  On these hard to draw permits, why not share what you know since you may never draw it again.

I think everybody must have interpreted his response different than I did.  By no means will a guy completely know all the units when applying for many out of state hunts.  To me, he sounded like he used 10 points for a tag that he knew nothing about, then asked about info.  After reading it again, I can relate to what he probably meant.  Hence, the reason I stated" Not to sound like a dick".  Was hoping he'd reply that he researched the unit and felt it would be a good choice to spend his ten year wait, and was now gathering the info to make it successful.  And by no means if it were an area for an out of state quality hunt that I knew something about, that I wouldn't share it with that member via PM.  I've done it several times. ;)

I spend a lot of time on the site here, but don't say to much. It's funny to me to how worked up some of you get over some words that people say, and that's all I'm going to say about this one.

I will have a great time going to a new place that I haven't seen before. It's not about having to take the biggest animal. it's about the whole experience, from research to the drawing and finally getting drawn, to the travel, to the time spent there and the coming back to reality.

My trip this year at this point is to Utah for this deer draw, then to Mt. for another deer and home. There are still some draws out there that we are all waiting for.

Roger,  I think the logistics of the hunt is half the fun/challenge, drawing the tag is the hard part. Sounds like your on the right track and enjoying the ride.  I have some intel on the unit but it's about 7+ years old and probably low value at this point.  If you do get in a crunch let me know and I'll dig it out.

Congrats and good luck!

Some people have been getting calls and/or emails that they sold more tags than allowed for a few units and so they will be crediting the credit cards of those that will be loosing the draw.

As of now I have not received a call or email. Hope it holds until the official emails come out about the drawing results.

Well no luck for sheep, elk, or deer in Utah this year.
