Turkeys in Cle Elum??
« on: May 08, 2012, 08:01:28 AM »
Are there any turkeys in Cle Elum?? I'm heading over there in about a week for a long weekend and would like to try hunting them if they are there. I'm 100% rookie. Never hunted wild turkey in my life, but I really want to shoot one. Mostly to find out what they taste like! Any tips?? I have a good extra full choke and some waterfowl camo, but I imagine I need a call, right??

not sure about the turkeys but you need a box call ... very easy for the beginner to learn ..and a video so you can learn what sounds to make and how to make them ..

Right on with the box call, it's the call I use most. Works well for locating and when setup. I also suggest buying a mouth call and trying to learn it. It's most helpful when both hands are on the shotgun. Even the cheap push button calls will work in a pinch. I would invest in a hen decoy too, I use a single hen most of time hunting to give something for a gobbler to look at instead of me.

I've been scouting for the last month over there and have found nothing. Not even a picture on my trail cams. Almost seems like the birds moved out during the wildfires last year. I'm packing up and going farther east.

If dad is coming so far away. I would take same time off and hunt the northeast side.  at least 3,700 birds killed each year. Cle-elum is like 350 a year.  :twocents:

Did you try calling the wdfw biologist and see if they will point you in the directions of some turkeys. Folks are going to be tight lipped about there spots over there.

I live in Cle Elum and have watched the turkeys wax and wane for the last 10 years.  This year is mediocre at best.  I've seen the fewest toms of any year.  Hopefully we have a good nesting and carryover for next year.

Shoffy,

The season is still 2 weeks off, don't come too soon.  I would even recommend coming around the 1st of May instead.  South of 90 and East of town there will be some birds on public land.

I've got trail cams from low elevation to high. I've not seen a bird yet in the Cle Elum/ Elk Heights area this year. We did see 7 hens in Teanaway area a few weeks ago that were on private land but that's it.

With all this nice weather you would think the toms would be off on their own gobbleing like crazy.

I am sure there are flocks that have not moved into town....birds will follow the snow line at this time of year and then come back down ...

You might want to head more NE towards the other end of the valley ;)
