Would you go back for him?
« on: August 05, 2008, 04:26:00 PM »
My buddy and I drew our 2nd deer tag on the east side, and plan to hunt elk there as well.  It would be nice on the gas budget to concentrate our efforst on one area.  However, last year, when elk hunting the Oly Penn, I came across a 2 pointer that had a fairly good spread for being a two pointer.  He also rubbed on cedar which I prefer over alder rub.  I was being a sneaky *censored* and didn't see 'em until I walke to within 10 yards of him playing with his girlfriend.  He got up and grunted at me, and then closed to five yards.   I got ready to shoot him bc it looked as though he were going to charge.  Only did his girlfriend running away spare me from having to take him down.   That was on November 7th--already in gone wild in the rut.

He was on an abandoned railroad grade next to a river that needless to say, was very, very green and quite thick.  I am 99% sure no other hunters venture in there so unless he was eaten by a mountain lion (I came across a cow elk skull real close by), he's probably still there.  But what would he be this year?  3 points? 4, maybe 5?  I don't know enough about how genetics and nutrition would influence his growth.  ???

In this country he could very easily still be a fork. Sounds like he was a mature fork when you saw him though, so it might have guards, or small 3rds, it's hard to say. Most genetics on the Peninsula take 4 or 5 years to get over 3 per side.

U have to go back there to prove that u are more of a man than that deer.... Maybe slap his gf on the ass and he'll come up to u lookin for a fight.

I think a pimp slap to the face would be preferable.  Right before shooting him.  Much classier than doing it after the fact.

Interesting.  I guess with the cereal grains in the agricultural lands in E/WA they can balloon up much faster.

I was always told that the rain leached away so many of the vital nutrients and minerals, so it inhibits horn growth. I cant really say what is right. But it makes some sense to me.

Okay you should be able to figure out the directions based upon the marks I made on my map that I left on my kitchen counter just be sure to lock the doors on the way out because I own many expensive guns that I just leave under my bed and I get quite nervous traveling away from home for weeks at a time but that's just how it is for life at 121 Sycamore St in Des Moines Washington i ate a worm once.
