My buddy and I drew our 2nd deer tag on the east side, and plan to hunt elk there as well. It would be nice on the gas budget to concentrate our efforst on one area. However, last year, when elk hunting the Oly Penn, I came across a 2 pointer that had a fairly good spread for being a two pointer. He also rubbed on cedar which I prefer over alder rub. I was being a sneaky *censored* and didn't see 'em until I walke to within 10 yards of him playing with his girlfriend. He got up and grunted at me, and then closed to five yards. I got ready to shoot him bc it looked as though he were going to charge. Only did his girlfriend running away spare me from having to take him down. That was on November 7th--already in gone wild in the rut.
He was on an abandoned railroad grade next to a river that needless to say, was very, very green and quite thick. I am 99% sure no other hunters venture in there so unless he was eaten by a mountain lion (I came across a cow elk skull real close by), he's probably still there. But what would he be this year? 3 points? 4, maybe 5? I don't know enough about how genetics and nutrition would influence his growth.
