JBLM Range 15 to have weapon some guns banned?
« on: May 13, 2012, 11:15:02 AM »
I overheard some of the range people talking with some of the other regulars. Something about there being a complaint and that .300 win mags and .338 lapuas were going to be banned from the range. I'm not sure why and not sure if there are any other rounds that won't be able to be used. Anyone have any better info about this?

thats a kinda crappy. i know our local range doesnt allow .50 cals, exploding targets or tracer rounds but as far as i know the big magnums are not a problem. did you hear why they were wanting to ban them??

I'm guessing crotchety old guys who shoot cowboy/black powder/rimfire and feel the big magnums are to noisy or there is no use for them. At least that seems to be the theme.

They aren't talking all magnums though. That's why I'm confused. It can't be from noise because there's nothing at that range but other ranges all around it. It just makes no sense to me.

If noise is the problem, then I will have an issue with my Socom16.  That thing is louder than or just as load as the 300 mags.

May have to go there in the next couple of weeks to find out what is up.

Wtf really noise?? It's a gun range of course it's gonna be noisy that's why ear protection is required for EVERYONE who is out there. If people want quiet I suggest they take up reading at the local library where the loudest disruption will be the ocassional toddler fit.

Pretty sure it has nothing to do with noise.

Yes it is. I believe it's 7 bucks for civilians and 5.50 for everyone not civilian.

It is supposed to be open to those who has a military affiliation (military ID card holders, families and their guest), and those who has registered to hunt on the base, also required to register all firearms with the base provost marshal.

HOWEVER, over the years range 15 workers are very relax and do not check anything.  So you can pretty much say it is open to everyone.

Yup, he has it right, $7 & 5.50 respectively.  Open on weekends,  range goes hot at 10:00Am go there early if you want a spot.   Can't wait until July they are open on Fridays too.

Just found this thread, and I see it is a little old.  But in regards to the base banning .300 & .338's, that must either been a rumor or something has changed, as I just registered my Rem .300 mag on post to use the range and hunt.

During reqistration, nothing was said about the caliber.  I was given my vehicle pass and a pass to keep with the weapons and told to have fun.

In today's mail I received my weapons registration form back, signed off approved and stamped good-to-go.

I talked to one of the guys running the range two weeks ago and he said there is something proposed, but it is not finalized yet.  Military wont take action until it is a written order.

He also mentioned that the largest caliber would 30.06.  The reasoning from his perspective was pretty lame.  IT is because magnums can go further than none magnums, if ever the bullet go above the burm.
