Sorry to be soooo slooow today. I probably put 250 miles on the truck today running to the ID Fish and Game to check the bear in, running up to the meat locker and dropping the meat off and running the hide and skull to the taxidermist and then going back over to Idaho to clean up the bait site and haul out my bait container. I'm wore out.
So, I mentioned in the Bear Bait in Idaho thread I was thinking about pulling this bait. I had four bears hitting the bait, but they were all small, pretty colors, but small. The season ends tomorrow in this Unit, so I figured I would use the weekend to move the bait over to a Unit that goes all the way to the end of June, near Avery. So I hike in and the bait site is all tore up. I check the camera and there is a really nice bear. So all plans change. I hike back to the truck, get 50 pounds of sweet COB and hike back in and re-bait. Run over to my property near Saint Maries and pull a treestand and steps. I go back yesterday and pack in 30 pounds of cherry flavored popcorn and put up my stand. I get all set up by 2:30. I was pretty much soaked with sweat, it was very warm. So about 5:40 I'm looking down the hill where I think they will come from and I see the reddish brown sow that has been showing up with the really small cub. She moves off, I think because there are other bears nearby. At 6:10 I hear something approaching from the same general area where the sow was at 30 minutes prior. It's the really pretty red cinnimom bear, she's about 110 pound sow and right behind her is this black boar making hey honey noises. He's following her and then sees the cherry popcorn. Circles the bait and walks in to the bait. He looks up at me once, but I'm weaing leafy wear camo and he's looking towards the sun. Wind is perfect. He walks up to the popcorn and grabs a mouth full, perfectly broadside. I came to full draw with the 59# Sapphire Hawk Longbow and, well even at that range anyone could make a perfect shot. Arrow zipped right through, he lunged, landed on the pile of popcorn and then almost face planted because when he took off all four feet slipped on the popcorn. He ran back the way he came and in just a few seconds I could hear him spitting up and gurgling. The little sow wasn't sure what was going on but moved off slowly. I gave him about 15 minutes and headed down to him. I walked it off tonight, 40 yards exactly from shot to pile up. I took a few photos and then wanted to get him back up the hill before it got to dark, so I went and got the game cart. Flipped him onto the cart and then could not budge him up the hill. So I called my wife and asked if the oldest boy could come out and help. It would take them about an hour and half to get there, so I packed all the gear back to the truck and then hiked back in and gutted him. As soon as I gutted him I was able to get him wheeled back to the bait site and then managed to get him back to the truck about the same time they arrived. I think my son was happy to see me at the road.
He has a fantastic coat, thick, thick hair, no rubs. Nice boar. Got his hanging weight today, 189 field dressed, so I'm figuring he was about 210ish live weight.
