It is hunting, hunting grouse is like hunting mushrooms. Find it, take it home and eat it  :dunno: you have to search them out. If I wanted to shoot something flying I'd be duck hunting.

Why would you hesitate about shooting the grouse on the ground? Unless you thought it was an unsfe situation

If you're just getting meat, then there's no reason to hesitate.  If you're hunting, then there is obviously a lot more to that than just killing by any means possible.

My thoughts exactly.  If I am hunting for the sake of hunting, then getting it on the wing would be fabulous, missing it might be even better for those who understand.  If I'm hunting for the pot, (rare, but does happen) then I would shoot it.  I only hunt for the pot once or twice a year and it is only during backcountry hunts with no other protein but what I collect.  I doubt very many here actually go into the backcountry dependent on their shooting to eat.  There isn't much like going hungry after hunting all day to sharpen the senses.

Boom.......no hesitation unless I'm in prime deer country with a un-notched tag...

Any grouse that runs, is a terrorist.  Any grouse that doesn't run is a well-disciplined terrorist.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

If I'm 'HUNTING GROUSE' I've usually got the shottie in hand. I'd prefer to take them on the wing. If I'm out scouting/hunting for other game and I have pistola or rifle in hand, I'll take them any way I can as long as I can shoot the head off. I won't aim center mass with center/rim-fire cartridge...

As the old saying goes.....

"A bird in the hand, is worth 2 in the bush."
Stan Marsh: "My Uncle Jimbo says we gotta get up there early. Right Uncle Jimbo?"

Jimbo: "That's right, Stanley. Animals are much easier to shoot in the morning."

This has never been an ethical dilemma for me.

~ I was taught from a very young age, to never look a gift grouse in the beak.  :chuckle:

Ethically I've got absolutely no problem with shooting on ground, in tree or anywhere else that's safe.  But in this situation...I'm not shooting.  The only hunting I do is upland birds and the only time I shoot is when my dog points.  I live for great dog work and whether I bring home the bird or not really isn't that important to me.  The beauty of it is, this only improves the dog work and in the long run he becomes a bird finding and handling machine.

Either way.... I'll take the easier ground shot in a heart beat.... Plus I can aim with my 410 to not have to pick pellets out of the bird....

Since I specifically hunt grouse with a .22 pistol only, ground grouse for sure.
