Hurry up...you fellas are stacking them up this weekend.

OK so here is the story. The alarm went off at 4am and I really didn't want to get up but I did knowing possibly this could be the day. I hunted an area and didn't see much sign so I went to a hole different area of the unit not knowing what to expect. I drove probably 4 or 5 miles before I decided to get the boots out and start walking. I was walking not even 5 minutes before finding fresh sign. I came up to a Y in the road and went left and thankgod I did. I walked 20 yards around the corner and could see some movement way up the old road. I saw it was a bear and ranged it at first at 193yds.  The bear was walking away from me so I knew I didn't have much time. After looking at him for about 20-30 seconds and didn't see any cubs all I could do is just wait for him to turn while my cross hairs were on him. Then a few seconds later he turned quartering away and aimed behind the front shoulder and let one out. He lurched down and ran maybe 30ft. then rolled off the road down a steep embankment 20 yards to were he piled up. It sucked butt trying to pull him out of there but I did it by myself. And I didn't have a camera with me up there so I had to wait until I got home to take pics of him with the wife and kids. I'm not good at guessing weight of bears but my guess is that he would be around 200lbs. What an exciting way to fill my spring bear tag. Its been four years of putting in for it and now I cant wait until I can draw it again. Sorry for such a long write but I am just super pumped about what just happened.

Thanks everybody! And thankyou Machias for posting those pics I suck with computer stuff. My question to you guys before I head to work this morning is how long should I hang the meat in my garage before cutting it up? Its in the upper 40s at night and mid 60s during the day. I would like to hang him for at least two days but was thinking about just cutting him tonight just to play it safe.

I'm shooting a Remington 7400 semi-auto. 30-06 165 grain Remington core lock bullet with a Leopold scope. I don't get to hunt with this setup alot because I'm usually hunting with my bow. But I love this gun. This is only the second animal Ive killed with it and both have been bears. All of my other animals I have killed have been with my bow. 8 deer 4 elk 1 bear.

That's some pretty warm temps in my mind as far as bear meat goes.  Put a fan on the meat and that'll help pull the temp down some.  If you have room in your fridge, what you could do is Bone the meat out and then keep it in a fridge until your ready to cut it up to final size.  Another option is to elevate the boned out meat above some ice (or dry ice) in a large cooler.  Keep the meat dry if you use the ice process.

Finally I got him all boned out and into the fridge. I ended up having 91 pounds of just meat. Probably would of been more if it was Sept. or Oct. But I'm very happy with what i have and glad its all in the fridge cooling.
