Best unit for OTC bulls in Washington?

Actually the deschutes is no joke.  My profile pic is one of them.  Problem is there is very little public land to hunt.  Military access huge advantage of base land as well.  These elk are very smart and as soon as any pressure occurs they will head to privateland where they cannot be hunted.  Last week I seen lead cow with collar.  Game dep. is tired of people sneaking on to land after these elk.  Many "poaching" incidents around yelm/rainier the past few years.  Landowner permission will determine success rate.  I dont deal with madness around here anymore.  Winston is where you need to go!  Lots of elk, lots of hunters.

I don't see any sarcasm. Good honest people giving good honest advice to those who do not wish to hunt but instead have the hopes of others lining up a bull for them so they can squeeze the trigger and have their picture taken with monster bull which will be on the cover of their new book on how to bag the big one.

What's the best unit in washington where you can shoot more than just a spike with out havin to draw a special permit?  Judges based off amount of area to hunt, herd size, and chances for success?  West or east side doesn't matter.  Go!

He has been around long enough to expect those answers...
But he "was not asking for your honey hole" or any specifics, just an opinion on the best unit.
I say looking at harvest reports, Winston.
Now if he wanted to hunt a less crowded unit...
The best one is the one I will be hunting.

NE corner gain access?  there is millions of acres to hunt elk in NE corner that is public or timber co that is open to hunting

Hold the phone.  I'm not asking for new spots to hunt or advise on where to go. I guess I should have made a poll or something.  It was just for general discussion.  I hunt east side Washington and Idaho and I know what to expect in our any bull units.

St Helen's herd has some good opportunity at branch bulls. Not a ton of real big ones but decent opportunity if.you.work for.it.
I second huntnnw on plenty of huntable land in ne.

Oh yeah there is a ton of land up there, plenty of room for a large huntable herd of elk ; ).  Last I heard, moose outnumber elk now up there.  I would like to see it turn into a better OTC area to hunt.  Tired of the good areas only having 5 tags available.

Lewis and Packwood units have a ton of elk, but also a lot of steep rough ground... 

Winston is a zoo, but if you are patient you can get into elk just about every day..  PLUS you have to deal with the jerks at Weyerhauser opening gates on a whim & letting trucks in after you hiked in 5 miles before daylight,,,,   

I know guys that take bulls out of the Ryderwood every year as well... all I ever find of elk is tracks and crap in that unit...

Coweeman has good elk hunting, but like the Winston, 

I hear some of the coastal units are pretty good, but never hunted them, so have no first hand knowledge...
