trapping gun

i am going to start trapping and was wondering whats the best rifle or pistol to carry on me, i don't want expensive because its going to get beat up allot.  what do you you use on a trap line? and advise would be great, and also is the trapping test hard??? the wdfw told me i didn't have to take a class i could just read the book and take the test. so any advise would be great.

alot of guys carry a .22 revolver. I use just a basic 10/22. Looking into a pistol if i can find one on the cheap cause they're easier to carry. As for the test, From what i understand, all trapper education is now done through the WSTA. All you have to do is go to www.watrappers.com and all the info is there. You can either attend a scheduled class or there is also a home study option. As far as the test beign hard, that is subjective. If you read and understand the materials, it is not a big deal. If you can attend a scheduled class, i would suggest it because they are lead by experienced trappers who put the materials in rwal world terms that are easier to understand, imo.

I have a smith model 317 the best little trap gun weight nothing and is stainless.It is alittle expensive but it is the best 22cal revolver I ever owned you on eof those gun you would pass on to you grandkids.

Hey where you live? the test is not to bad at all. You can use the study guide and study a little. I have a .22 Marlin I will be using. I am going to try and get a silencer for it as wel. I would not use any type of holow point as it could do alot of dammage to the pelt and you want them as clean as possible.

A 22 works great. If you are after bigger critters you might even look into a 22 mag. I am a handgun guy anyways, so a good revolver will get my vote.

x2 on the 22 revolver. A lot of guys use CB caps or shorts. I find they are so hard to get I just use long rifles because they are available. A lot of the shorts end up being loaded hot and more like a magnum round it seems to me like. If you can find honest to god shorts that's a very good round.
Those kind of rounds don't go well with an auto. I'd really advise a revolver because of that.
I have an old Charter Arms 22 revolver. It's beat and it is not accurate. That is good for me because I don't worry about it and treat it pretty rough.

ruger 10/22 shoot solids NO hollow points they leave to much damage even when you shoot through the ears the less damage the better I have dropped many a bobby at  25 yards when they do not know you are there they are more calm and you will get a better shot my 2 cents

For ease of carry, and since your shooting will be mostly point blank... 22 mag pistol..  worn in a shoulder rig.. you would never have to worry about it getting hung up on stuff either.

The test is no problem.
As far as guns go I carry a browning Buckmark and a stainless 10/22 with good glass.

P.S the Browning Buckmark has put down a chit load of fur. Very nice pistol to have on your hip.

I think a 22 mag is over kill. A 22 long rifle is plenty good.no hollow points,shot a coyote in the head once and he just looked at me, last time I did that. 10/22 or I have a ruger single six in 22 that works well.

I've always used a Rossi .22 revolver. They are a good price and work well. Stainless preferred of course. I prefer .22 shorts with a shot through the ear for a quick dispatch. I usually pack it with half shorts and the other half hollowpoint long rifles in the cylinder. I do that for if I see something not in a trap or if its grouse season you can pick up a few. Just remember what the cylinder is rotated to- shooting at a grouse with a short can be frustrating!

I use a ruler single six with the long rifle cylinder.I also carry a single shot 17HMR rifle.it's a little heavy but it leaves a very tiny hole.not even stitch worthy.

I use the 20 grain tnt fmj or a 17 grain vmax. The vmax doesn't frag like a hollow point.

Depends on what your trapping. A .22 is good enough. But if you are to scared to get close to them a low powered rifle will work fine. I guess a 243 has more than enough power.

I cannot even imagine the time when I would use something as big as a .243 to dispatch an animal in a trap. 22 magnum is too much.

  a good 22 will take about anything in a trap, add a scope and you can sit back and pop'em
