.54 cal bullets?
« on: May 18, 2012, 07:09:29 PM »
Anyone care to suggest a .54 cal. bullet for elk?
Now that we can use them I don't know which copper jacket bullet would be best.
Always used lead powerbelts in 405 grains in the past but think copper jacketed would be better.

Thanks
John

If the 405 grain Powerbelt has been shooting good for you, I'd start with the same one in the copper version. You could try the 348 grain but heavier is better, unless you're recoil sensitive.

Which rifle are you using?  That can/could make a lot of difference in bullet thoughts.  Is it a 1-48 twist or 1-28 twist?

But, basically there are some really good 45 cal bullets that will drop in a 54 cal sabot and be very effective.  There are now even 54 cal sabots that you can use 50 cal bullets in.  Speer makes a very good 50 Deep Curl hunting bullet for those big pistols...

I shoot the Remington 700ML. twist is 1 in 28.
Ive got some 300 grain speer jacketed 44 bullets and was thinking of trying to find a .54 cal sabot that would work. Any thoughts?

Shoot!! with a Rem 700 you are in like flint...  The Rem is a 1-28 twist so you can utilize most anything.  The 300 grain Speers would make an excellent bullet for shooting.  Personally I would suggest the Speer .452-300 grain Deep Curl with 110 grains of T7...

You might look through this thread when you can..

Most of it applys other than the sabot suggestions...

I shoot the same gun. Love it. I went through the same thought process last year. Listen to Sabotloader, he knows his craft. I ended up with the Barnes and it is shooting like a dream.
