First Turkey Hunt
« on: June 02, 2012, 02:18:45 PM »
I've always been jealous of the turkey hunts I read about on here ………………. well I finally went!  My sons, who farm with me, got tired of me always talking about going "someday," but I told them we just couldn't go because we had to get the beans planted.  Lesson learned; when properly motivated a couple of young guys can get a lot done.  They kept the planter going all day and a good chunk of the nights.  Saturday the 26th they finished, even though we had a couple of rain delays that made the trip look like it wasn't going to happen.  Now it was time to carry out my end of the deal, none of us had ever hunted turkeys before and had no calls, turkey smarts, etc. so I gave Dale at Bearpaw Outfitters a call (some of you here on the forum may have heard of the guy :chuckle:) and he hooked us up.  We hunted very long days and the birds weren't very talkative, but as the sun was setting on our third and final day (Wednesday) my son notched the last of six tags between the three of us.  It was a great hunt, Dale & Ray showed us some beautiful country and birds, and Dale's wife, Tara, kept us very well fed.

The first day was textbook but that second day was really tough, couldn't buy a gobble and it really had me worried. Thankfully luck was on our side the third day. Ray and I both had a blast, it was great hunting with you guys.

It took me a couple years to get my first bird.  Nice that Bearpaw put you on gobblers off the bat.  Looks like a great time.
