Zeiss Conquest 4-14x44mm w/Rapid z800 on a .30 cal

I'm looking to upgrade my plain jane Leupy 3-9x40 on my .30-06. I have the ability to pick the Zeiss for a few.hundred off retail and I like the looks of it.

My desire is to maintain a 200 yard zero and be able to take shots on game to 550 yards, the max distance at my usual range. Occasionally I wouldnt mind target practice out to 800, which is within the aught sixes range. Yes: I can hit iron at 550 consistently with my current setup. I want to upgrade for both more magnification and a little  more precision with the Rapid Zreticle.

Where I'm hung up us that Zeiss seems to recommend per their ballistic charts to have their 3-10x40 with the rapid z600 for standard .30 cal guns. It's only for the magnums  that they start pushing the z800 on the 44mm scope. I shoot 180 grain soft points if it matters. Anybody else go through this?

Go to the Zeiss website and run your ballistics through their calculator for the Z-800.   If you can live with the yardages they list for each mark on the reticle (they probably won't be exactly 300/400/500) go for it.   It's a great scope.  I have one on my 300 mag and am impressed with it.

If you can get one for a couple hundred off, go for it. If I could buy one for a couple hundred off, I would be all over it. They are great scopes for the money!

Because of the ballistics of the-06 you will have to use lower magnifications,changing power settings changes changes point of impact on ballistic reticals,lower power spreads reticle out for slower bullets,you have to use their website to use that reticle.

i have one on my 300 Ultra, and really like it.  Each load is going to be different anyway, so use their calculator and see how it all shakes out.

Go buy the scope. Load a pile of your favorite bullets. Shoot gun. Nothing is as well proven as you shooting your bullets through your gun at known distances.

I have owned 2 of that same scope, they are excellent.  Use the Rapid Z calculator, it works, my longest shot done accurately was 765 yards, WELL WORTH THE MONEY.  I am actually looking at possibly selling mine though, I just got a huge taxidermy bill.

I'm looking at the same scope, did you buy it??  I thinking of ptting it on my .300 RUM.

Thought I'd follow up on this. I decided to pass on this scope for now and just re zero my Leupold Duplex to 300 yards. With the reelection of the Dear Leader its much more important to stock up on ammo these days.

I don't think you made a bad choice.  I spent most of my life in Alaska, and even for long shots on sheep 9x has always been more than adequate.  It seems that lately folks have become really obsessed with high magnification.  Especially if it's a rifle you'll actually be walking with, lighter weight isn't a bad thing.  I just bought a Kimber 84L Montana in 30-06 and I'm putting a VX-3 2.5-8 with std duplex on it. 

I own quite a few aught sixes and do a lot of load work up for that caliber.  Check out this website:

It's a maximum point blank range calculator.  Figure out the size of the kill zone on the game you're hunting and plug it in.  I use this all of the time.  For one of my favorite loads using a Barnes 168 grain TTSX I sight in 2.3" high at 100 and I'm golden out to just past 300 yards with no hold over.  If you can chrony your favorite load and know the BC of the bullet you can dial in your combo very well.  I find it preferable to the old 1.5" or 2" high at 100 yards as it helps you get more precise.

I have one on my 300wm. I used the ballistic calculator and found I was outshooting the calculator by 12" at 500yards. I did my own calculating and now it's dead on. It is a great scope! I'd recommend it. But before you zero it and then think you are good to 500+, test it a lot
