SE ALASKA BEAR HUNT III
« on: May 29, 2012, 08:59:51 PM »
Ok going to give this a try again.  First two posts went FUBAR! Will try and post pics first then follow with the Story or should I say Stories!

Short and sweet,  was an amazing trip perfect weather 3 bears down and a freezer full of fish.  Best part of the trip was watching my son take his first Black Bear and Brown Bear.  "and oh yeah I dropped a melon head"

Ok here is the boys Brownie, not a giant but had a stunning coat.  Most of the bears we saw were rubbed hard.

The story.  My trip was scheduled was May 9th - 16th but at the last second the night before flying out my son called with a nasty weather outlook for the week so I postponed the trip for a week in hopes of a break.

Was the best move ever as the weather was stunning from the minute I touched down and the bears were out in force.

Our hunt was DIY as my son has been a Juneau resident for the last 6 years.  We had a Brownie and 2 Black bear tags.  Once on the ground we hit the local hardware store for some last minute gear and we were in the boat and headed out within 90 minutes.

On the trip to camp we spotted 4 different brownie sows with cubs and one skinny boar with a rubbed up coat.  One sow was pre-historic in size, biggest Preditor I have ever seen,  was truely a National Geo moment.  Watched her play with her cubs, one of which had a broken shoulder probity from a boar attack for 30 minutes within 100 yards.  Exciting but keep us on our toes.

Next morning we started scouting beaches and checking out bears "mostly sows w/cubs"  and made a couple failed stocks on a pair of boars.  About 7:30 pm that day we spotted two more boars working a tide line  and made another stock.  Due to a rocky landing we had to anchor the boat several hundred yards from the bears and make a stock.  Once we got back to where we had seen the bears my sons peaked over a rock and spotted them both at 75 yards.  Once I got into position with the video camera he was able to line up on the nicer of the two.  His first shot seemed to miss as the bear froze in its tracks.  The second shot connected and sent the bear running straight at us.  "makes for a very shaky video at that point" and after to more quick shots the bear turned into the tree line and dropped.  Turns out the first shot was to far back and the second & third connected.  What a rush.  We wasted no time getting to work and getting off that Island before dark.

We made camp that night right at dark and after a little food tried to sleep a bit.  Next morning headed out again in a different direction hopefully looking for a Black bear.  We went 20 min out of the bay and I spotted a montser black dot in a small cove.  We drove right past the bear and were able to beach and stalk to with in 210 yards of a big boar.  We watched as he fed toward us and I settled into my 300 wsm.  I shot dropped him like a brick.  We then watch for a second and he tried to get up again so I reengaged him and it ws over.  ( recovered both rounds 1 large entry hole and 2 exit holes within a inch on the opposite shoulder).   After cleaning and loading the bear he headed out again and within an hour we were on another nice boar and it was my sons turn at bat again.  His bear and story played out identical to mine.  Within 4 hours of setting out we had 2 nice Black boars on the deck and were headed to port.

We were able to catch every monument of all the stocks and shots on video.

After a day of processing and regrouping we spent the rest of the week, pulling in some monster Kings, Halibut Black Cod and crab.  Couldn't have asked for a more epic trip with my boy his buddy and his father.

This is awesome!
Work is taking me up that way in July. Will be ANchorage.
I really want to hop on the fully paid trip to do the same thing.
I am not sure of the rules, but am way to cheap to pay a guide.
Anythoughts?

This was my 2nd DIY trip up there in as many years.   The entire 8 day trip cost me a little less than $2k.  That included air, tags, food, boat fuel and misc.  (not including some gear bag additions)   Black Bear are one of the best high % OTC DIY hunts in Alaska.  It does all depend on the weather and where you intend to hunt thou.  Where we hunt is pretty low pressure and is not considered a big guided destination.  We only saw one other hunter on the whole trip.

I would highly recommend it and will make this an annual trip and next year will be taking home a Giant Brownie.

I'd eat a lot of things before I ate a brown bear.....seen WAY too many worms in scat and heard WAY too many stories to give it a try.

Right on. Did you rent a boat, or just hike the beaches?
I'm up there for two weeks, and plan on getting 4 days off, so I will have to stay within "day trip" range of Anchorage.
If you have any suggestions, i'm all ears. I have a new 300WSM that is begging to go!
thanks, and again congrats on a *censored* trip!!

My son has a 24' skif we use to cruise the islands and mainland coast lines.  I'm not that familiar with the area around Anchorage, but in July the bears won't be lingering on the beaches as much, there are a few summer salmon runs in that area you may wanna hit.  Good luck Wild Bill
