« on: August 07, 2008, 03:47:36 PM »

I have hunted those units both modern and archery when I live with my parents in Peshastin and every deer my dad and I  have gotten out of there with a bow was well under 50yds probley in the 30 to 40 range.  Just dont get in a hurry and use the wind and terain to your advantage till you can get into range.  I would sugest glassing an area then try to stalk withing what ever range you feel comfortable with.  Another good way to hunt that area is find a place where the deer are crossing a ridge or drainage and just sit and wait.  The main thing is not to get in a hurry, there are alot of deer in that area.  If you are hunting the early hunt the deer shouldnt be pressured very much.  Good luck and best wishes.

In my area the terrain is wide open with no cover other than rolling hills and draws.  There are plenty of deer, but they've got no patterns.  Spot and stalk in that circumstance means, "See them feed over a ridge, run two ridges past that, find a bush to setup in front of, and pray that you picked the right spot when they come over that ridge."  It is possible, and I've been plenty successful with the bow, but it is not easy.  There simply isn't enough cover to get within 150 yards of them when they're bedded where I hunt.  I'd use a treestand over a good trail, but there are no trees, so it would just turn into a short chair.
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

Thanks Hoyt204 & Todd.  I'll have to scout that area and go from there.  I'm not good with stalking, but just have to try it.

MichaelJ, of course I'm joking.   :chuckle:
