You do not have to become a member.  You can simply certify an animal without a membership if you pay fee.

I have shot a couple, had them both scored but never sent in the paperwork to put them in the book, it is still sitting on my dresser.  Is there a benefit to joining P&Y?

I guess your question should have been.  How many archery hunters are Pope and Young members.  You will get alot of no's from the rifle people!!

I suppose you are right, the fact that its posted in the bow hunting section probably isn't specific enough for everyone to realize its meant for archery hunters, my bad.

I have shot 2 maybe 3 deer that would go P&Y but have never had them scored.  I'm curious at times but I don't think I would unless it was an absolute monster pushing the 200 mark......but, don't think that will ever become an issue

So from reading all of the replies it looks like you can have book animal in the book without having a membership, you are just in th book.  You can also be a member by paying an annual membership fee.  To begin paying the annual membership fee do you first need to shoot and register an officially scored animal?  Is there a benefit to paying the annual membership?  I figured the only benefit to entering my deer would be to say I was in the book and that didn't appeal to me as much as being in the Washington Big Game book.

Rainier10, to become an Associate Member does not require a book entry. The quarterly magazine that comes with membership is of high quality, with membership comes a frame-worthy certificate of membership and with each subsequent year's membership card comes a 'year' sticker that goes on the certificate. A number of years of Associate Membership is required (along with meeting certain other criteria) before a person is eligible to become a Regular (voting) member. Their website should have details.

Thanks Snap, I went to the website and checked it out.  Looks like annual membership is $40 and you get quarterly magazines, the certificate you mentioned and updates on upcoming Pope and Young projects.  It says, "The Club promotes and participates in improving sound wildlife conservation and wise use of our natural resources."  It also says they are similar to the Boone and Crocket club.

Similar to Boone & Crockett, yes. What Pope & Young accomplished just by forming and flourishing was to establish verifiable data for game management people to use as proof that the bow and arrow is a viable big game hunting weapon, capable of putting down the largest game North America has to offer.
