Cabelas Alaska Pack

I am considering buying this pack, $70.00 is a steal, the review are fantastic on the site, but curious if anyone else has this pack and can give me a recommendation (using it for packing out meat).

really nice packs, my buddy just packed out a bear with it and did fine. the only bad thing is it can get a lil confusing with all the straps and compartments

I don't think for the price you can beat it. I have the older version. It is light weight and pretty dependable. I would suggest buying extra pins for it. I did over load it on a hike out of the Brooks range on a sheep hunt and had to replace the pins when I got home due to the fact they were bent. I purchased extra's from Campmor. But then again it was way over weight and that was the first version. I did make a fix to the waist belt as it used to have a type of webbing on it and made a nice ring around my back. I ended up covering it with fleece. I like the big pockets for spotting scope and tripod. I think you will like it. I need to weed down on some of my packs as a guy can only wear 1 at a time and doesn't need 6 or more different ones.

Well I wouldn't be taking it with me in the field, I have a Camel Back Commander for that, it would sit at camp and then be picked up when an animal is down.

Not sure if its the same I have the freighter frame from a while back no pack just the frame its great.

I bought the frame just as a meat pack.  Everything is very comfortable but is a little noisy without messing with it.  I sawed off the extensions that are just above the shoulders so that they would be just below shoulder level with a smaller profile so that they wouldn't hang up on brush.  I just lay my pack over that and strap everything tight with 3 bungees so there is no sound/movement.  I also cut all of the pins and rings out and replaced them with the best quality leather boot laces I could find, the ones that you buy for whites that I think cost about 10 bucks, they last for a long time and I just loop them through about three times.  The metal pins and rings are too loud and squeak.     The most weight I have hauled out would be the back half of a very large deer and his head/neck and my 25 pound pack.  I don't have a clue what that weighed but it was terribly heavy.  I have never had the leather laces break on me, although I check them every once in awhile and keep an extra lace in my pack.
