Reading other people's trail cam cards

Saw a thread on another site about a guy who got caught using a field viewer reading another guy's trail cam SD card.  The cam took his pic as he's looking at his viewer...priceless pic.   

The pic got posted because the card was missing when the owner got back, and he suspected the guy in the photo must have stolen it.  Good assumption.  Anyway, the suspect gets on the thread, confirms that he read the card but denies stealing it. 

My question is this...does anyone out there think it's okay viewing the card on someone else's cam?  Some of the guys on the thread were trying to defend it along the lines of sitting in someone's ground blind, but to me it's more like breaking into a house and looking around.  Just can't believe people would think that's okay.

I think its pretty wrong, but if I had a ladder stand out in the woods, and I wasnt there, I would have no problem with someone hunting out of it..

I had someone mess with mine,they turned the camera 90 degrees and in doing so unplugged the camera from the battery.  I have a pic of their shoulder.  At least they didn't steal or deytroy it.  If it's not yours, don't touch.

I think its complete B/S...If you wanna read a camera go out like the rest of us and buy one...I could see maybe mooning the camera or something funny but you better keep ur lil dick skinners off my camera...lol.....Just my 2 cents....Justin

I personally wouldn't, or think it is ok to do. That is someone elses hard work out there why should you stumble upon it and reap the fruits of thier labor? just my

I’d say it constitutes thief of intellectual property, what’s on a person’s card is proprietary/trade secret data.

I don't think it's right either. I put that camera there because I want to know what is going on there. If you want to know, go spend your money and buy a camera and put it up there.

What site was this on.  My buddy in AZ called me today and said Ryan Hatch of Muley Crazy magazine called his cousin and said some dude stole his camera.  What the thief didn't realize is there was another one a few feet away and got the picture of him taking it.  Brady was going to Hatch's to see if he recognized the guy.  Sounds kind of similar.

It's on MM...link was sent to me this morning by a buddy in AZ.  It was pretty short then, but now it's going nuts...Ryan Hatch just put out a $500 reward for the conviction of the guy!     I'm guessing it's the same story you heard BC Chaser.

Private or public land either way it's wrong but if you put your cameras out on public land I would expect them to be messed with not saying it's right just how it is.  Bottom line if something is not yours you should leave it the f%^k alone.

As a matter of fact, I now have a small digital camera in my pack just so I can read the cards from other peoples cameras..

The sad part is he's an Official Measure!!! The guy is caught red handed!!! He violated that camera period!!! He had no business messen with another person's stuff. Prosecute him!!!

I wouldn't do it. However to try and get someone charged for tampering with it criminally or stealing it from a place on public land. Good luck. Doesn't sound like much of a case to me. Neither does intellectual property. I'm not trying to be a bad guy but that's just what I think. Me being a $$hithouse lawyer and all you can take that at about 25 cents on the dollar though.

Mine are all locked up tight.  You'd have to cut the damn tree down (and I pick big trees on purpose) or cut the cable lock.  If you go that far, just take the damn thing because if I catch you, you're in a world of hurt  .  I don't take too kindly to people taking liberties with other peoples stuff in any case.  If it isn't yours, leave it alone!!

Ethics should rule your every move in the woods whether you are scouting, hunting, hiking, or whatever.

here is another example, if you sat in some place all day a deer walks up you are about to shoot, then some drives up and shoots it. how pissed would you be??? you went through all the work and some else took what you worked for, same with camera's you put it out there its yours some one else walking around should touch it cause well you did the work they did nothing.  still not cool ( little extreeme but same idea)

I put a killer stalk on a cow elk one time and punched her through the lungs with my 7mm. She ran out of the timber and into a wheat field and layed down to expire. A guy came around the corner, hammered his breaks, jumped out, laid across his hood and put 5 rounds in her before she even stand back up. He had no clue she was already dead. When I met him at the elk he was so pumped. He had never killed an elk before. I said congadulations and went and got my game cart for him and helped him get it out. Eventhough I had spent countless hours out there and he was a drive byer I just couldnt tell him. You cant get mad at someone for getting an easy kill right in front of you no matter how many hours you have put in. That is part of hunting. Everyone deserves a little luck once in a while.

Back on subject. If it is public land you have to expext that the card will get read or if you have a stand it will get used.

No touch. I imagine if I found one in the woods, I would hang the BA or something like stated earlier, but not touch it... Maybe pose a few photos of a booger up my nose or something gross, but not touch it.

i would write a note and take a pic of it asking for the picstures off of it at least so then the owner decisdes. if somen did that to mine i would toss him the pics.  then i at least know he wasn't all over my camerea

I have notes attached to my cameras, that states my phone number and states I would be happy to share the pics BUT LEAVE THIS CAMERA ALONE.  If they want pictures I would be happy to send them. Hell I post em here and there anyways.  Better than losing the whole camera.  My camera would be worthless to someone anyways, with cuddeback it would be a pain in the arse to figure out the password.

some guy had a trail cam near one of my bear spots...but I think it was to catch dumpers...since it was near the beginning of the road and right were trash is consitently left...

needless to say..I am on there a few times..probably look like sasquatch toting a rifle...

I didnt touch it, but it was pretty much in plain site, if you just looked at the tree.

Just talked with a DNR employee in the Capitol Forest on Saturday that said they are thinking about using trail cams in state forests to control dumping and illegal shooting.

Fish and game already uses sensors to alert them when someone is drives into an area that has a lot of poaching going on. I would bet $$$ that there are sensors on every road that comes close to the new wolf pack

mine has a lock around the card,  also i am thinking about making a bear box that locks/bolts to tree and the original locking stuff that comes with it.

Or, a sticker on you camera advising anyone messing with it, that they are being filmed from another camera and to just back away...?
