The gun will fire once, but the bolt will not unlock without gas flowing through the carrier and applying pressure to rear of the bolt (gas impingement). Does the front of the upper receiver have a hole for gas tube to pass into it? If so, it might be easier to buy an ~$8 gas tube and install it yourself. If your lower was originally transferred as an 'other' (most stripped lowers are transferred as this, but be sure), you can remove the stock, then use it with a pistol upper. You can temporarily wrap paracord over the carbine buffer tube if you want to avoid confusion while at the range. If your lower was transferred as an 'other', it can be converted back and forth as much as you want.http://www.atf.gov/files/regulations-rulings/rulings/atf-rulings/atf-ruling-2011-4.pdfIf you bought your lower assembled as a rifle lower, it cannot be converted back to a "pistol" unless you want to jump through a bunch of hoops and paperwork....gun laws...
