Kansas Deer hunting SE corner
« on: June 06, 2012, 10:30:28 AM »
Who here has hunted in Kansas? I may have the oportunity to go Bow whunt there this fall. I know some one that live near Yates Center (Hr E of Wichita)... I was trying to read the regs and get a idea of the cost and if i can buy over the counter tags for whitetail... I was a little confused about it because they mostly talked about the draw system for NR hunters.  Thankyou for the help.

You have already missed the Kansas draw. It only takes 1 point but you still have to put in. I don't know if they have landowner or outfitter tags though. I'll be hunting south central next year.

The last few years they haven't had enough non-resident applicants for some units.  Those get sold over the counter first come first served, and they go on sale June 18.  Depending on where in Woodson County he'll be taking you, then you'll be in Unit 11, 12, or 14; they have lots of licenses left for all three of those units, so you'd better figure out quick if you want to go, because they will sell out.  You pick the unit you want to hunt and then an adjacent unit that you might hunt.  I'd try being there about Nov 12-19 if you're bowhunting.  The any deer tag is right around $325 and is good for whitetail only and only in the unit you specify and the adjacent unit you specify.  Mule deer are by draw, so don't shoot one of those, but those are generally found in Western KS.  An extra doe tag is $52 and is OTC.

Here's some help:

So it seems unit 11 and 14 have leftover tags.. They have a rule for a primary and secondary hunting unit that must be NEXT to each other... So since both of those units border unit 12 can that be my secondary unit? and how is the hunting different for the secondary unit. I ask because the Buddy we are to stay with has mostly hunted unit 12 and could put us in some areas, but he knows only a little about are 14...

If the tags in your desired unit sell out too quickly, then simply choose a neighboring unit as your first choice unit and your desired unit as your second choice.  The tag will be good in both units.

Don't discount the public walk-in hunting land if you are needing more areas.  The area I've hunted had plenty of private land enrolled in this public program.  It was every bit as good as the private land we hunt, and I've only ever seen one other person hunt it.  The state has a book that shows where in each county the walk-in land is located; I got one at the local gas station, if I remember correctly.  Get good at understanding sections and half-sections on maps, and it'll be easy to see where you can and can't hunt.  Also, I've knocked on quite a few doors around the area, and I've only ever received one "no", and that person was polite about it.  Google Earth is your biggest asset for Kansas; you can have your stands all but hung before you even get there.

I was told that the pine trees there aren't very big, and have LOTS of branches...  I'm guessing i won't be that far off the ground maybe 15 ft...

The scrub cedars that they have are short (20') and thick (10' diameter, lots of branches); a stand in one of them is about 10' with lots of cutting and no steps needed, but you stick out like a guy who cut the heck out of a cedar just to get a stand in it.  The hardwoods are a much better choice for a stand if you've got them on the places you hunt.  I shot one buck from the ground there, too.  A treestand just lets you get away with a little more movement and keeps you there a little longer; you still have to hunt the wind correctly.
