They freak out after the first or second day.  They hear trucks roaring everywhere and hunters walking in the woods.

i don't think they are to freak out after bow season they get pushed around and pursued some and maybe a Little call shy. but most bulls don't get hunted hard due to few people with bull permits.  good luck

The entire archery season is nothing to the elk compared to the first couple days of rifle.

In some of our eastside units, there are way more people in the woods on atv's and motorcycles on the labor day weekend than Bowhunters for the next two weeks.  On an individual basis, some may be spooked bad, but for the majority, it's just business as usual.

The elk know what time of year the people start chasing them just like they know the cows are about to be ready.  The first bawhoom that sounds off gets them thinking.  The second one sends them into the holes.

If you ask the Game Dpt. they'll tell ya that's exactly why they don't let you hunt in the Colockum for Cow Elk anymore.  They told me that they don't want to Archery guys going in there and "disturbing" the herds before rifle season.  That's probably one of the biggest crock of sh.t I've heard them say yet.

To answer your question yes, elk do get pushed around from hunting pressure.  The trick is to find the area they retreat to when pressured.  I kinda like the elk being moved around because the elk you pressured moved on to another area, but the elk someone else pressured may have moved in to your area.

yup my first year back elk hunting was my best year. guys had been chasing this herd of 11 elk all day from canyon to canyon. i talked to a couple guys and found out where they had been hunting/seeing the elk. after i heard what i needed i wished them luck and headed off to an area they had yet to hunt. and sure enough 5 minutes from the truck i found the herd bedded down.
