High hunt
« on: August 08, 2008, 05:58:27 PM »
Leaving way too early in the morning for a scouting trip in the Glacier Peak area. Just trying to get a lay of the land and see if we spot anything. Any tips for a couple of newbies? When the actual hunt comes my buddies dad who has hunted there before will come with us, we just want to do the ground work ourselves. Not looking for anyones honey holes just some tips i.e. best time of day, best area in the landscape to spot. I am assuming dusk and dawn, and around trees in the shade. Thanks in advance and I will let you guys know how it goes when I get back.

Check out my high hunt post in DEER Hunting, there should be some info to help you.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

Cover a lot of ground during the first hour of light, this time of year the deer are really easy to spot cause they're so red...  once you find where the deer are feeding, make a mental check and keep glassing... Once they start bedding you really need to sit down and glass HARD with a good spotting scope... most of the time this year the bucks tend to stay out of the deep timber cause they're horns are still a little soft but that'll be changing real soon....  Good luck!

I got back a few hours ago and the trip turned into a bust for the most part. It turned out the road was closed due to a wash out about 2.5 miles before the trailhead, went from a 5 miler to 7.5 in. My buddie and I were still determined to check the place out. About 3.5 miles from the trailhead we saw a decent bear about 125yrds away across a gully at which point I was debating my decision not to get the bear tag! We planned on setting up camp and then glassing the evening and morning, right before we set up camp it started pouring! That lasted until the morning which we were socked in with clouds and rain until about 8:30 when we decided it was time to leave. By the time we hit the truck completely exhausted we decided that would not be a great spot for us despite what his dad had told us (when we told him it was a 2.5 mile hike to the trailhead he said there is no way he would have even started, but hey we are still young and dumb so why not right). We will try another spot in a few weekends. By the way there were still spots of snow at 4200ft in case anyone was wondering.
