Hope to take the "Cow" out of Cowiche
« on: June 09, 2012, 12:28:21 AM »
First year putting in for a cow tag and I got lucky....I'll be hunting modern in Cowiche unit this Oct with a cow tag. Any advise or pointers for the unit would be great, never hunted there myself just stories from a close friend who has hunted it so far. I've hunted elk on the Westside for about 10years and never drew blood so I'm pretty excited!!

Thanks in advance
Shoot to kill....or don't shoot!

Congrats. My brother and I and my Dad drew the muzzy tag for a cow in there. Should be fun. Never hunted modern so can't help you. Good luck.

Should be a fairly easy tag to fill.

Should be a fairly easy tag to fill.

That's what everybody told me last year.  It did not quite work out that way for me, or anyone else I talked to last year.
There's a reason they call it hunting, not killing.

There is a ton of elk in there. A lot of hunters to though.  Still an easy tag to fill.

Harvest report shows 65 elk killed out of the 200 permits last year. Sounds like prettty decent odds but definitely not a sure thing.

If you leave the road, put the effort in and shoot strait. The odds of success are really really high.

The elk really get pressured in there, especially if you have to go after the archery guys and the smoke polers. I would suggest getting high and hunting the timber away from roads because they will be educated.

Archery guys? There is not a general season archery elk hunt there. Permit only. Muzzy guys hit it pretty hard though.

i live in this area and it will be an easy tag to fill if you are even half a hunter!

why do you need snow, the elk are in every portion of the unit anyways.

i know of 12 elk killed in there last year and i went for a drive during modern and muzzy season and saw elk from the road each time.

:yeah: drive up any of the upper roads, pick a spot to pull over and hike. you will see elk.

My bad lol didn't mean to throw archery in there, but the muzzleloaders will have the elk all flustered up.
