2 gray wolves trapped on Colville Reservation

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- Two gray wolves were trapped on the Colville Reservation this week and outfitted with tracking collars.

Other media outlets report the wolves were the first captured on the Northeast Washington reservation in more 100 years.

The tracking collars will help the tribe's biologists monitor the movements of the wolves, a 68-pound female and a 71-pound male. Both are about 14 months old.

Tribal official believe between three and four adult wolves inhabit the San Poil watershed.
The pack probably moved in from either Idaho or Canada, and the sprawling reservation could have additional packs.

Joe Peone is director of the Colville tribe's Fish and Wildlife Department. He says tribal members have varying views on the wolves return. Although Indian people have a strong spiritual connection to the wolves, many also worry about the impact they will have on wild game.

Glad to hear they caught a couple, wish WDFW would hire their trapper to catch some of these other wolves.   :twocents:

Many people in Idaho dislike Niemeyer, but everyone says he can catch wolves.  :twocents:
Glad the Colville's are getting them caught and collared.

I heard from a friend that the WDFW trapped and collared 2 wolves this week (smackout pack). Perhaps they have Niemeyer helping them too, not far between these areas.  :dunno:

With a little research I learned that wolf activity has been high, it took a little digging, but here is the latest Washington wolf news:

Why don't people like that trapper?
We would be better off to not have been, but since we're here, it's our responsibility to exist without standing in natures way, It is not in our DNA to mandatorily become environmentally destructive juggernauts!

Why don't people like that trapper?

Carter Neimeyer is a former state and Federal trapper (I can't remember which state, although I did read his book) with a BS and MS in wildlife biology.

He was initially very active in the extirpation of wolves, but later came to believe that much damage attributed to wolves is actually by other causes.  He is clearly pro-wolf, but I would also guess  that he is not quite as pro-wolf as some believe.  I think his work and statements have been picked up by the pro-wolf movement, and he has become their poster child.  Much like how Alston Chase has been vilified by some environmental groups.

Actually only about 45 miles.  It is 54 miles to the ferry, but I digress.  Saw them just pass Mile post 19.

I saw them last fall and my mom saw them last summer.  There has to be more than the two.  You think they would get clipped by a car in the valley.
