Finally - Bear Down!
« on: August 08, 2008, 11:14:41 PM »
Only missed one evening hunt this week, and finally took one today.  Quick story.....

The plan was for my little brother and I to go hunting this evening, but my bro called at about 2, saying he was too tired, and I'd have to go alone.  I was bummed, but figured the hell with it.....I'm going on my own.

I was running late from work, and finally got to my hunting spot at about 4:00 PM.  I quickly laced up my boots,  threw my pack and bino harness on, and loaded my rifle.  It's a pretty good walk up the old logging roads, so I got to it.

I had been thinking about the specific spot I was going to hunt this evening all day, and it was a ways in there....so I started to walk quickly.  As I crested the hill, I saw a small and over grown spur road on my left and quickly realized that I've never taken a look at it.  It was hidden by a huge hill from the road, so I figured I'd give it a shot.   I started my leisurely walk in, and low and behold...ANOTHER HILL.  I actually almost turned around so I could get to my spot, but curiosity to what was in there got the best of me.  15 minutes into my hike, I saw a bear out of the corner of my eye!  I froze.  It was literally 20 yards from me, and looking straight at me.  I raise my gun, aimed for the neck, and dropped it in its tracks.  It literally, rolled over right then and there.  It was done.

It's my first bear. I'll be honest, I was so pumped that I was jumpin' around like Richard Simmons.  After calling my wife and a couple of buddies to share my success, I called my cousin, as he has keys to all the gates.  He was actually on his way in, so 10 minutes later, he showed up to drag it out.

It measured 6 feet on the money, nose to tail.  I'll post pics tomorrow, but I wanted to share with everyone.

I'm pumped!!!!

I'll post them tomorrow afternoon - on my cousin's camera.

Not sure about taxidermy plans.  Def a rug, but I was actually thinking of a full body mount, but we'll see.  Wife might put the ax to that one, but we'll see.

Man, I'm pumped.

Id hate to explain my full taxidermy bill to anyone...  but it was rough...lol  and MN still has a deer and a elk of mine....lol

On a side note....Thanks Michelle.  Being my first bear, wasn't sure on the cuts....as I didn't want to mess anything up.

I actually brought up your post on my blackberry.  LOL.   My cousin rolled up and said...WTF are you doing?  We were still laughing about it at his house.

Thanks again!

:IBCOOL: I'm glad all that info came in handy!  Hopefully it will come on handy for a couple more people ( members and lurkers).    :chuckle: I'da like to have seen the look on your cousins face when he found you trying to skin a bear and while looking at your phone.

Congratulations. Hope you didn't get your new pack dirty!  Then again your probably didn't have time to get it adjusted with the need to get to the hunting area in a hurry.

I am so jealous. I would have been out today but decided to dink around most of the day trying to install an in the tank fuel pump in my hunting rig.  >:( What a nightmare!!!

I worked three hours trying to drop my tank and couldn't get to a few items (big arm syndrome), so I then abandoned that approach, and cut an access panel out of the read deck in my Bronco. Will be welding up some flanges tomorrow to wrap things up...what a pain in the behind. I just wanted to be hunting. Could have been worse, the pump quit after four days of hunting....so I guess I am lucky to break down at home...

Nice to see your hard work putting together the bear skinning guide is paying off?

Oops, and sorry about the thread jacking!

Alright - alright - FINALLY have the pics ready.

A few details about the bear.  It measured 5' 7" - nose to tail and weighed in at about about 225.

Just to give you an idea of what kind of terrain he was in....this is where I shot him.  As I said, he literally jumped up, turned, and rolled over next to the log.  I stretched him out to get a good pic.

Thanks for all the comments - I'm definitely pumped, and it still hasn't worn off.    I need to get my brother onto a bear now!

I'm going to boil and bleach the skull myself (thought it would be a cool project).  If anyone has any info, links, etc....let me know. This will be the first one I've done.

Thanks.

Getting the skull totally free of meat and other clinging matter is the hard part. Ask Rainshadow1, he is sending me his boiled skull to see if my beetles will finish cleaning it. I can help if you ask.
