Decided not to do a early pre season scouting trip and save the gas money...but it would be more beneficial to get there 4-5 days early and do my scouting then...good or bad idea?  :dunno:

How long are you planning on staying up there?

Planning on 4-5 days early and then the 1st two weeks for starters....I have the leave from work to stay longer if needed or I can come back later in the season when the leaves are gone and the snows starts to fly... I really want to get a P&Y bull...

4 or 5 days early is a good plan. One trip to recon the area before that might be a good idea even if it's a redeye weekend. By the opener you should have an idea of a specific bull or 2 to try for. Don't wish for the time to go too fast it will be over too soon.

personally i would arrive 1-2 days early and stay longer when the season is open. why scout before season when you can scout and hunt at the same time? there are plenty of moose around and people will help out. swing in at Whitetail plus in deer park and start talking to people if you hav any trouble finding moose plenty of people will offer help.

Early is not a good plan with moose..they can travel over mountain ranges in hours!! this isnt sarcastic.. I have watched moose chase cows across mountains and so far away u woulda had to drive to find them! Now if we could hunt them Sept 1st then u could locate a bull and u have a serious shot at getting him..the rut really causes these moose to travel. If you cant find moose in 49 your not out  :chuckle:

So, who knows the magic way to tell a good scoring Moose? My goal is to get a P&Y bull.

Here's what I've gathered..3 brow tines & good paddles, what other things do I look for? How wide are their ears, is that a good way to tell what the spread is?

If you've never seen one in real life, you'll know when you see a big one. I've seen some really big ones and small ones. Here's an example of your moose you'll wanna kill this year.

that is not a moose u wanna kill..the paddles look to be 5" wide..a big one will be 11" plus..the bull I got was 13" wide

just got back from the scout trip, more to learn the road system. The maps suck..... On the NF maps, some look like roads (306 for example), but are single track motorcycle trails. It also is REAL brushy in a lot of places. The area is huge, the huntable area is less. Still TONS of land there... TONS. but there are miles of area that you cannot see 20 yards into. IMO, I would go check it out to learn the area.... One surprise I did have (unrelated to moose),  I saw a mountain goat at Calispell Peak summit. That was neat.
Moose make VERY odd sounds.

Just got back on the site so am late to comment. I had the tag 2 years ago and would be happy to share everything I know. PM me if you still are looking for info. There are a lot of moose so don't be in a hurry to shoot unless you know it is a monster. It only gets better later in the season when there is snow and no leaves. They are huge, way bigger than a bull elk. You will need help just to cut it up let aone get it out. It is going to be a blast.
